Most of these maps are just highlighted stuff from Openstreetmap. I can actually see when I last made changes in the area due to the new A4 highway

Do you have 1x2 roads part of the main highway system of your country with trees planted along the road like this but outside cities? How common is this practice in your country?

In Italy it's quite common, famously via Appia has many of them since Roman age

Many of the Romanian roads are like that, but they started to cut down the trees in the recent years because there were many accidents that included vehicles smashing into trees at high speed.

Our road authority plans to do the same. We are having an argument that this situation is not unique only to Bulgaria.

Here in Vojvodina alleys of mulberry tries were planted many decades ago. Now they are being cut... They are good to protect road traffic from heavy winds (especially during winter to prevent snowdrifts). In the past, mulberry leaves were used as a food source for silkworm.

After all, it's not tree's fault why drunk drivers smash into them...

Close to my house:

(location)

A lot of people have died here due to crashes. Because of 1: trees and 2: a very busy road (N259). This section is now closed for through traffic. But most of the rest of the N259 has trees right besides it. (Klutsdorp - Steenbergen and Steenbergen-Dinteloord)

This section is being replaced by a highway nearby, so that's that. From then on the road will carry much less traffic. And according to Dutch logic will probably downgraded like hell...

There are many roads like this especially in the valleys of moutains parts of Slovakia. But I think it can be more dangerous on the straight road in Panonnian lowland - http://goo.gl/maps/POsMX, http://goo.gl/maps/wEAEG

I saw some pictures from France roads, many had lots of trees on the side.

I heard of quite some cases of road downgrading in the Netherlands.
Does it happen often? Why?

The film »Skiing 7 Summits« features a story about a first-ever skiing expedition to the 7 highest mountains of all continents, including the first ski descent from Mt. Everest. Slovenian extreme skier Davo Karničar, the first man ever to accomplish such a feat, completed this project in December 2006.

His extraordinary skiing descent from Mt. Everest in year 2000 has likewise not been repeated yet. Other skiers, including Kit DesLauriers, managed to ski only sections of the descent or were either assisted by rappelling or carried their skis on foot across the cruxes of the route.

Davo Karničar - Legend

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The High Tatras

The hardest ski route in Slovenia (Fritsch – Lindenbach, Mt. Grintovec)

Unfortunately in Sweden we don't have a lot of them, afaik.
We either have forest surrounding the road or nothing at all.

Snow!

There's 5-10 cms now. Looks like there will come a little more since the entire snowfront is now turning southa bit again

Traffic is chaos: already 500 km+ and it's only 7:30.

Funny how a little bit of snow turns countries like Britain and Holland into chaos. We have snow throughout the winter, and turn it into profit. Gonna hit the slopes in a little while...

Trees too close to the road are considered dangerous. Typical setup in Finland https://maps.google.fi/?ll=62.240655...2,14.9,,0,1.74 where most or the roads run in the forests. No need to plant trees.

I don't think we have too many places like that (on main roads). One example that I can think of is here: http://goo.gl/maps/7N20Q but the trees are further away from the road.

This brings in another question. Estonia has many places where hedges have been planted next to highways to prevent snowdrift. Like here: http://goo.gl/maps/iLz3F Are there examples of this in other countries as well?
