I did not assume anything. You asked for a reply, I gave you a reply.

Well, I watch the Daily Show (with John Stewart)a lot (my fav. American show), and one thing that I've learned watching it, is that certainly not all Americans are against new gun laws, and that if they are, they're certainly not as retarded as mr idiot in the youtube clip.

My "Go ahead, comment" was meant for the person who felt the need to post this month-old clip and introduced it with "no comment."

What I'm wondering is, do all Austrian men of a certain age (women too?) have guns at home, given that the country just voted to continue compulsory military service and that in Switzerland, where the same concept exists, the guns are at home.

It's perfectly easy, it appears, for foreigners to bring guns into Austria: http://www.austria.org/going-to-aust...s-a-ammunition

Not that I - who, I repeat, haven't touched a gun in at least 35 years - would have any interest in doing so.

Sorry. But you can understand (I hope) why I thought, "guns again?" And I for one am still...affected...by Newtown and the debate that's been going on since then (and before, but it's more intense. As it should be.).

I don't find that clip funny at all, for a whole bunch of reasons, but that's my problem.

That said, a remark of yours on this thread at the time of Newtown - that you couldn't imagine what it would be like going to the movies if you knew someone might start shooting - has stuck with me. It may sound cold, but your odds of that happening are probably as low as your odds of being in a plane crash. Or lower. We're really not living in fear here...

Peace.

That, to me, is sad. French should be very easy for Italians to learn, and vice versa, and they border each other and they're both such important countries in world history and culture.... If Europeans have (I know this is a generalization) decided that everyone should just learn English and not bother with their neighbors' languages - as I said a few hours ago, it doesn't need to be a matter of choosing one or the other - that's a bit sad. German ought to be at least as important to people in Strasbourg, for example, as English is.

The biggest USA advantage against Europe is that USA is a single market without language differences.

Advantage in some contexts, sure. But such a variety of cultures and so on close together is something I for one am sometimes jealous of.

Well, that's silly.

EDIT: I'm not saying that I, as a native speaker of English who speaks French very well and German much less so, would try to have a conversation with someone in Strasbourg in German. That would be silly. But I'd think enough people in Strasbourg would be interested in the culture, the history, and so on of the large country right across the river from them that they might find the effort of learning German in addition to (or even - gasp - instead of) English worthwhile.

I'm not picking on Strasbourg, of course; it's just one of many examples I could have used.

The return of "last edited on February 30th" was very temporary, due to some "like" function. So I decided to "like" my own posts . I use my other (disease-related) nickname, though, due to obvious reasons.

Well, as I said before, you cannot learn 3 or 4 or 5 languages without leaving out something else important from your education. If you have to learn another European language other than your own and English, I'd choose Spanish - because of its worldwide importance - or German - definitely the most important EU language. French is not that important, neither in EU not internationally. For Italy, economic and cultural ties with France were important in 19th century, much less so in the 21st.

You know problem in europe is also that powerful ex-colonial EU countries looks to other not that economicaly strong EU countries (Greece, Spain...and of course Slovenia) exalted.
That is also one of the big differences between EU and USA. You see and that is why EU will never be able to compete with USA.
A little bit of everyday example, Milka chocolate when you buy it in Slovenia is made in Bulgaria, 50 km away in Austria you buy the same Milka chocolate but with one difference its made in Germany or Austria..
Now question wouldnt be cheaper to deliver that shipment of chocolate from Austria which is just 50 km away from Ljubljana our capital and not from Bulgaria which is i dont know 1000 km away? But no for balkan states is one tipe of food for west europeans is the other.
And dont get me wrong i got nothing against Bulgaria, they have great traditional food and wine that is the fact!
You see Penn in USA you all have the same food no matter if you are from New York or Los Angeles or Florida. And the shipment comes from the factory which is nearest to town or region.

Look at this SLO tv video (its in English) - at 11:5

Don't forget that Strasbourg (Straßburg) was for quite some time part of Germany, the German heritage there is really big.

Language barrier isn't the biggest problem of EU.
The main problem is that a monetary union can't be healty if there are no solidarity agreements between the politically indipendent members.
If a US federate state go bankrupt, the central government and the FED would provide to save it. In the EU it wasn't like that, at least until the recent institution of the EFSF. There were no any solidarity obligation between Eurozone members.

I'm at all pro EU, democracy, free movement, but I don't think EU will became a single, federal state like the USA within this century. Too many cultural and economical differences between countries. One feel himself Italian, German, French, Polish,... before feeling European. In America one feel himself American before feeling New Yorkers, Californian, Texan,...
EU should enforce basic laws among his members, to ensure peace, democracy, development and human rights but should also leave them a lot of freedom in matters that don't have international relevance, respecting local customs, traditions and usages.

EU would have been single state, politically united, with single citizenship long ago if there would have been one EU language only...

Its not like this is going to change any time soon, thus unless we breed that babel fish, we will have to find some other way around it.
