We call it 'carbid'. Kampen is a place where they use that a lot. Chris lives very close to Kampen, so he should know

It's quite bad over here as well. Lots of bangs and Belgian fireworks. Someone at my work went outside with five packs of old milk and five firecrackers. Result: white lake

Yeah, they do that a lot here. It's actually forbidden in most towns. It makes a sound like some grenade explodes somewhere.

I'm about to risk my life and cycle to my parents

So who is spending New Year party with SSC?

I'm going to have myself some drinks I've always wanted to try. Along with some delicious ice-cream. And I'm gonna have a glass of genuine, branded Latvian Black Balsam I brought all the way from Riga to celebrate!

They are shooting some fireworks here what they use in Switzerland to generate avalanches with... I'm not sure how they're called in English.

By the way, I'm a bit bored now, my friends are out of town (Thailand actually) and there's nothing but tacky shows on TV.

If you're bored, join the virtual SSC party

It is still just 15 minutes for the coming 2009 here in Greece (GMT+2). At this extreme corner of the Balkans, we keep our fireworks for Easter. There are great "wars" then, accompanied by shots by guns as a lot of Greeks have hunting rifles, while in the island of Crete every "respectable" person has at least a gun or even a machine-gun kept since the time of the resistance in WWII plus some more recent imports.

For the moment, most people are staying at home, as the general trend for tonight here is to go out after 12.30am and until 5 - 6am! All bars and clubs open at this time and the parties usually also start at about the same time. At about 12.15 there will be amazing traffic jams in Athens and the rest of the Greek cities - tonight accompanied with frost and lots of drunk drivers and pedestrians. I am lucky as I have just to walk 10 minutes to a friend's home that will hold a party.

My best wishes!!!

Stupid tradition in the Netherlands; the New Years dive. People get in their bathing suits and dive into the water at freezing temperatures surrounded by ice

I am not that crazy but i celebrated hardcore yesterday, too. I invited friends and we had a party, I drank so much that today I have difficulties with walking. fortunately the headache is gone, but I am feeling very weak the whole day and my legs feel very soft. However I didn´t have to suck ofcourse.

Hello everyone, my headache from dozens of vodkas and other stuff is finally gone. I went to some badass neighborhood (mini ex-Yugoslavia ), and there was a guy firing with a gun, I felt like in Iraq or sth. After that I went to a better neighborhood.

You're a bunch of alcoholists. I just had two glasses of champagne and that's it. Ok, the days before I was in Germany (I like Veltins ), but I didn't drink as much as you guys.

@Chris: did you swim in the IJssel today?
