The Big Rig: extension of Rowan Gorilla VI (268 meters)

Currently offshore company Keppel Verolme is working on extending the legs of the Rowan Gorilla VII offshore Rig Platform on the yard in the Port of Rotterdam area. The thing is quite spectacle for both legs (175 meter) and platform (93 meter) add up to 268 meters. The extension should take a month, after which it'll sail it's way back to Nova Scotia. Normally access tro harbour quay sides is quite limited but luckily there's a pretty good spot across from it (Welplaatkade Haven 4133 for RTM blokes).

01. Seen from the city, this image taken by forumer Michiel.

02. Actually from close by the thing looks shockingly normal by size, but that's only because everything else in the harbour is huge so there is no frame of reference there.

03. Close up. It actually builds itself up. I was hoping to frame some people on this one, but I can't spot any on it.

04.

05. The area is quite nice. Here's a look around. These are from acros where I was standing. I'm not sure what these are, but they are huge.
.

06. This is an odd looking fellow. According to the Keppel Verolme site (scroll down a bit) the thing came just sailing in, but I can't find too much on it.

07. I wouldn't be surprised if these were bigger then the ones in Giza.

08. Some other biggie probably doing something real useful at large...

09. This is what you get when gluing all of that together. (click pic for xl)

10. Bonus! While at it, I also took some pix of scenes where harbour meets city. Click for the xl version.

11.

here is a nice pix someone took of the yard area.

Wow, I've rarely seen an object which size is so difficult to grasp.

Gotta love that gritty industrial vibe. That rig is huge; I grew up near a port that fitted out and repaired rigs in Bass Strait - none of the ones I saw looked that massive.
