Derby Day @ Flemington

Spring Racing Carnival

My annual do - times to dress up and go to races!

First Saturday in November every year Melbourne host major series of racing carnival - its long established tradition

Derby Cup is the first one and this year attracted >120 000 race goers .

The whole week with total Four Major races would attract over 500,000 race goers. Additionally there were also about four other races held prior to this week on other racing venues.

Crazy month in Melbourne!

Went to Transit Bar after the races

We ended up having dinner @ Langham hotel to recover !

These events are Australia's corporate playground - peppered by the local Captain of Industries, celebrities & Tycoons
Major companies set up their over the top Marquees - invitations only!

and of course - Fashion on the field

Latin Festival @ Fitzroy Nov 08

Latin Festival

Sunday 16th November - Fitzroy

Great annual festival for the hot latinos in Melbourne

After having long lunch @ Brunswick street' St Judes Cellar with friends- we checked it out the Melbourne's Latin Festival

It closed the Johnston st - Fitzroy - the heart of Latino community in Melbourne

There were plenty of food on offer, dances and of course....the hawt latinos around

enjoy

The very bohemian Brunswick St - Fitzroy - I love it and I nearly go there every Sunday for brunch

Plenty of Paellas and exotic food

at this stage - Gappa & Justine have disappeared...

I dont know what it was

Dogs amongst the crowd

BBQ

Some people enjoyed the festival from 'home'

Performance Stage

Crowds enjoy the warm spring day

A gay shop @ Fitzroy

some residential streets around Fitzroy -a popular, funky & arty inner city enclave...

It is uncanny how much Brunswick Street looks like our Queen Street West here in Toronto (and we have a street called Brunswick, too! ) The festival looks great fun. Are most Spanish speaking people in Melbourne from South America, or Spain? I wonder if the toffee peanuts food was like what we would call Peanut Brittle?

Thanks for posting these pics of Melbourne in Spring.

These days I am living interstate, so its a rather emotional experience looking at those photos from Flemington racecourse and Brunswick Street.

I am glad that Victoria's economy is still doing very well and Melbourne is still the biggest growing city in Australia. I am very much looking forward to the next round of Tallies going up, and the further development at docklands and along the river. Please keep us informed, hey.

I've noticed there are many young Brazillians and Argentinians that have also immigrated to South Australia, where i am now living.

Unlike the USA, which has many thousands of poor and unskilled Latin migrants (their construction industry is built upon it),
Australia is fully recruiting skilled professionals from South America to help with our labour shortage. The South Australian State Government has had a lot of recent success in recruitment drives from Brazil and Argentina.

With unemployment in Australia at 3.4%, and with a good domestic economy, and with much of the world going into economic meltdown, I am sure there is still more latino immigrants to come out of this program.

These skilled migrants from Brazil and Argentina really fit in well to our sunny outdoors lifestyle. They are making wonderful migrants.

Alibaba... I don't recall ever seeing anyone post normal neighbourhood shots from the gay areas of Melbourne or Sydney. Have you ever taken photos while wandering about in gay nabes? I'd love to see some!

Sydney's is much more concentrated on one area than Melbourne. In Sydney these area's are along Oxford Street (Taylor Square) towards Kings Cross.

However Melbourne has several gay area's. The Northside's scene tends to revolve around Smith Street, Collingwood- and the industrial district east of that (Abbotsford), where you get alot of underground warehouse dance parties. Here the gay scene is much more grungier and is somewhat more similar to the type of crowd you'd find in places like Berlin.

The Southside (as in, south of the river) is South Yarra's Commercial Rd, which is (ironically) much more commercial and mainstream. That's where you find the big gay clubs pumping out chart hits, and drag bars, etc..
There is also St. Kilda which is home to Melbourne's gay pride celebrations in summer.

But overall I can't really speak for Sydney- maybe ask someone from there. The two cities generally provide different scenes.
