Great photos again Ali except for the ones with that ugly Gappa person in them; I wouldn't trust him if I was you.

Also lunch today was great, happy birthday mate!

Sunday @ St Kilda

Stokehouse lunch at St Kilda

It was a warm and beautiful Autumn day and this is a perfect time to celebrate birthday with looong lunch at Stokehouse restaurant St Kilda with good friends around

Clear day with bay was full of boats

Stokehouse restaurant - a fine and rather Melbourne bayside institution in St Kilda

It has a fantastic view over the bay and food regarded as 2 hats by the critic

We had great lunch at upstair section and then met up with other friends downstair until sunset

lazy husky

oooh...my cake...!

some sunset shots - wonderful time by the sea

see you soon....!

About an hour pretty much any direction east/north east of Melbourne they would -- between the months of June and Sept. There are ski resorts dotting through the Australian Alps to the northeast of the city.

It rarely snows in Central Melbourne in winter though, it has happend, but its rare. We mainly just get ice and lots of frost and fog. Snow is more frequent in the outer eastern suburbs (around Mt. Dandenong) as they are at a higher altitude, but again still slight. There was actually snow in some outer eastern suburbs on Christmas day 2006 (in the middle of Summer !)

As for the dogs -- we have some pretty intense summers -- and I'm not expert, but I don't know how comfortable it is for them. While our winters dont compare to what you'd get in Canada --- they can get quite cold with the windchill factor from the south -- fresh from Antarctica.. remember Melbourne is the closest 1million+ city in the world to the South Pole.

Melbourne - Sunday Footy

Sunday Footy in Melbourne

You are not a truly Melburnian if you dont spend your Sunday afternoon to watch a footy...!

Footy - as it is lovingly referred to by local is the Australian Football Leage (AFL) game - the most watched and attended sporting events in Australia.

It is originally from Melbourne and now has became a national game alongside with Rugby and Cricket.

The season starts in March and finish with Grand Final in September.

As per wiki info:

"Australian rules football is the most highly attended spectator sport in Australia: government figures show that more than 2.5 million people attended games in 2005-06.[24] In 2007, a cumulative 6,475,251 people attended Australian Football League premiership matches, a record for the competition.[25] In 2005, a further 307,181 attended NAB Cup pre-season matches and 117,552 attended Regional Challenge pre-season practice matches around the country.

As of 2005 the AFL is one of only five professional sports leagues in the world with an average attendance above thirty thousand (the others are the NFL in the United States and Major League Baseball in the U.S. and Canada, and the top division soccer leagues in Germany and England). In 2007, the average attendance of 38,113 made the AFL the second best attended domestic club league in the world, after only the NFL in the United States."

and

"Australian rules football has attracted more overall interest among Australians (as measured by the Sweeney Sports report) than any other football code, and, when compared with all sports throughout the nation, has consistently ranked first in the winter reports, and most recently third behind tennis and swimming in summer.[23] In some of the southern states, it is the most popular sport of all sports. As a football code, it is the most popular form of football in the Northern Territory, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia. It is less popular in New South Wales and Queensland, although there has traditionally been strong support for the code in regions within those states, such as parts of southern New South Wales including the Riverina and parts of Queensland such as Cairns and the Gold Coast"

I havent yet embraced this tradition into religious level - like typical Melburnian- yet today as I have two free tickets to the Telstra Dome matches in Docklands from work - so i have no reason not to go!

The tickets were for the Medallion Club - thanks to my employer who is one of the bigger sponsor of the AFL.

Enjoy the little snippets:

Telstra Dome from Docklands

During the break - I have a glimpse view over Docklands from the Balcony

The Medallion Club bar

The pit - By the way - it was a North Melbourne Club (Kangaroo) v Sydney Swan

in my seat - it has a little screen - telecast by Chanel 7 - for a close up preview

During the break -the cute Aussiekick teams played in the pit --

On the way back - droping my mate in Richmond - there is another macth is being held in the majestic MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground) between Richmond and Hawthorn... yes this city is sporting mad! Two major sporting matches held in same afternoon...for almost six months throughout the year

The city skyline from Swan St - Richmond

no worries Neorion... although pity they have to start the image by the Harbour Bridge.... ?? why?

The other attraction for me (personally) of this AFL is - of course - all of those sexy hunks running around in the pit with those sexy sorts

they are prettier than rugby players

the sportmen/footballers here are regarded as celebrity status - they are young, mostly tall, buffed, pretty and cashed out
pity some of them have managed to disrepute the league to some extend

btw - thanks Maelstrom... i did try to enjoy my life. so hard not to have good times in this town

Gotta love the footy, although we seem to appreciate different aspects of the game Ali. Photos from Fitzroy after tomorrow night?
