The Hamilton Beach Community

If you've ever taken the QEW over the James N. Allen Skyway between Burlington and Hamilton,
your eyes were probably fixated on the giant smoke belching steel mills of Hamilton Harbour.
But far below the skyway there is actually a vibrant neighbourhood that spans the long strip
of sand that separates Burlington Bay from Lake Ontario. In Victorian times, Hamilton Beach
was a summer playground for Hamilton's elite. Over the years, the neighbourhood has had its
ups and downs, but luckily, the current trend is up. Over the past few years many of the
remaining Victorian houses have been renovated while new developments are filling in the
blighted areas. The entire length of the beach strip is accessible and open to the public and
remains popular for summer recreation.

Nice pictures. Did you add a couple new ones? I don't rmember seeing that one of the two bikini girls on the beach. I definitely would've, or should've, noticed that from earlier.

Hamilton Beach's street layout reminds me of Dewey Beach down here. Dewey Beach is the same way; only one main road, with several parallel side streets connecting to the main road. Hamilton Beach is the closest thing to a barrier island on Lake Ontario, I would say (the Toronto Islands seem a little different).

It's definitely a unique landmass. Hamilton Harbour is completely landlocked, the canal under the Skyway Bridge is man-made. Interestingly, there is another ridge at the west end of the Harbour separating it from Cootes Paradise. It also has a man-made canal, the Desjardins Canal, that extended shipping to Dundas back in the old days.

btw, the pic of the two girls was in the original set on SSP, but it's not a bad thing to think you're seeing it again for the first time

A totally isolated community submerged into their own beach culture. Loving it.

I'm learning so much about the Hammer. I really only know bits of downtown. More pics please!

And i'm sure there's still a lot to know about, lived there for almost two years and this thread keep showing places i never thought of. That urban explossion during its golden ages knitted all those neighbourhoods along the horseshoe from houses with a savoir vivre architecture to commies. Also the result of the cultural mix given by all this years of massive foreign communities stablishment that ended finding in Hamilton a new home.

Let flar explain it with images.

It is amazing how much you learn about your own city when you start photographing it! Flar seems to know his city inside-out!

Looks a bit run down IMO. Many houses need paint job and repair. Why is it so neglected?
