Durand

Durand is one of the finest and most interesting Victorian neighbourhoods in Canada. Back in 2006, in one of my very first neighbourhood tours, I showed some of Durand's many mansions. In that tour I focused only on the mansions, but I thought it was time for a proper tour, one that shows what it's like to walk the streets of Durand. This tour shows a greater variety of architecture in the northern half of Durand, which is a mixture of apartments and houses. The need for higher density residential areas is part of the evolution of any growing city, but sadly, that need was satisfied by destroying blocks and blocks of houses, some of which included unique stone rowhouses from the 1850s and large mansions from the later Victorian period. Still, there remains a great stock of interesting architecture built from the 1850s onward in a variety of styles. Unlike many Hamilton neighbourhoods, there is very little uniformity here. In the southern half of Durand, townhouses and apartments give way to one of the the largest and most exquisite collections of mansions in Canada. While the architectural richness of the northern part of Durand may not be obvious to the casual observer, there is no mistaking the quality and uniqueness of the homes shown in the latter part of the tour. Victorian styles predominate early on, but as we move closer to the base of the Niagara Escarpment, examples of a variety of house styles popular during the 1850-1920 period are evident.

Thanks so much for the pictures - they're terrific, and help me see Hamilton (where I live) with new eyes. I particularly love the Durand pictures, as that's where I live now, in one of the non-mansions. (There's no picture of my house, which doesn't surprise me as it's not particularly interesting now, but we're working on it!)

For those who wonder what it's like to live in one of the victorians - it can be a lot of work to restore it, but many are in great shape and super solid. I love the high ceilings, plaster walls, high baseboards... the neighbourhood is also terrific, with an active neighbourhood association.

There are so many great old buildings in Hamilton, it's unbelievable. Hope Hamiltonians recognize what they have and restore/renovate. It's rare to find a city with so much that has survived the wrecker's ball. Hamilton is very lucky. One of the best in Canada.

I've learned more about Hamilton and Southern Ontario towns from Flar than from anywhere else! We are EXTREMELY lucky to have him as one of our members!

What's left is deceiving: only because Hamilton had so much does it seem that there is a lot left. In this neighbourhood, dozens of huge Victorian mansions were demolished to make way for high rise apartments. In the city as a whole, at least 75% of downtown and many entire neighbourhoods have been demolished.

I have a few old pictures of buildings that were demolished. These don't include many great buildings that were demolished, like the old city hall or the Bank of Hamilton building, which was Hamilton's first skyscraper.

Birk's Building

Central Collegiate

Wentworth County Courthouse

Post Office

Terminal Station

Ryerson School

A couple streets that were entirely wiped out:
