Salford City Reds Stadium | Salford | 20,000 Seats | pro

is officially under construction. Another fine addition to Gtr Manchester's sports stadia. Hopefully with a redeveloped Old Trafford (LCCC) to follow.

More information and renders below.

WORK BEGINS ON REDS STADIUM

13 February 2008

Work on the landmark development for the City of Salford Stadium, home to the Salford City Reds rugby league team, has started on site today.

Whilst land clearance and ecological work has begun, the first site offices and cabins have been delivered to provide a base for construction teams who will be working on the stadium over the next two years.

Chairman of Salford City Reds RLFC, John Wilkinson OBE, said: “We’re delighted to announce that work on Salford City Reds new stadium at Barton has begun on site today. Reds players, fans and local residents have waited a long time for work on the landmark stadium to begin and with the season getting off to such a great start on the pitch it couldn’t be a more exciting time for the Club.

“Should our Super League application be successful, our plans ensure that the team will play the first home game of the 2010 Super League season at the new City of Salford Stadium.”

The first in a series of scheduled meetings with Barton residents took place on Monday evening attended by community representatives and Councillors who will form a consultative committee during development of the new stadium.

Adam Thomas, Managing Director of Red City Developments, who also attended the residents briefing added: “As promised, residents, fans and officials were the first to be informed about the developments on site. Monday evening saw the first meeting with Barton Residents Association which will provide an important forum throughout the construction process for discussion and review of the build.

“It was great to see so many local residents and Councillors at the meeting and we look forward to working with the consultative committee to guarantee residents are kept informed through newsletters, websites, meetings and of course the Salford Advertiser. We have a detailed Communication and Involvement Strategy in place that will roll out over the next two years to ensure that the local community stay abreast of the stadium development at all times.”

Salford Reds Stadium gets underway
Thursday, 14 February 2008
Work has started today on a new 20,000 seater stadium for the Salford City Reds rugby league team.

Work on the £35million stadium in Barton, situated just off the M6O motorway on the outskirts of Manchester, is scheduled for completion in 2010.

The stadium is part of a £130million project being developed by Red City Developments over 50 acres of former industrial land.

The scheme will include retail, leisure and hotel developments.

It is thought to be one of the most ambitious regeneration projects in the North West, bringing 2,000 jobs to the area.

I wonder what retail they think they're going to put there. It's opposite the Trafford Centre and just across from a big retail park!

"Non-food bulky goods". I've heard a rumour of Homebase for one.

Taken today. (2 pictures)

It's hard to believe this will eventually become the site of a 20,000 seater stadium, hotel and shopping complex. It's an absolute s***hole round there ATM.

From the otherside of the site. Heavy machinery already onsite.

Red City to be on view

Chris Barry

10/ 4/2008

RED City Developments , the company set up by Salford business tycoon John Wilkinson to build the new sports stadium in Barton, has unveiled its design team.

Work on the landmark project on a 100-acre site has already begun, but until now the scheme has not had a project manager to lead it.

This job has gone to Drivers Jonas, which has expertise in delivering sports stadiums, including the Stadium of Light in Benfica, Portugal, the Riverside Stadium in Middlesbrough and the Madejski Stadium, Reading.

AFL has been appointed as architects. Director John Roberts pledged the new facility, which will be ready by 2010, would be 'one of the most visible sporting venues in the country'.

He said: "The Barton Bridge flyover, which cuts across one side of the site, provided us with a design opportunity to give passers-by a glimpse of the action inside the stadium." Leach Rhodes Walker, based at Riverside, Salford, is designing the four-star, 210-bedroom hotel, exhibition and conferencing facilities and retail space.

Also working on the development are SKM, Planit, RPS Gregory and Davis Langdon.

The hotel that will be within the stadium itself will be a MacDonald Hotel which will be their second hotel in Manchester, articles from 2005 before the stadium was given planning approval.

Hotel chain sign a £10M stadium deal

8/ 7/2005

SALFORD Reds' stadium plans have been boosted with the awarding of a £10m contract for a hotel to be built on the proposed site at Barton.

If the City of Salford Stadium project goes ahead, MacDonald Hotels will erect a four star complex with 208 rooms, banqueting and conferencing facilities for up to 1,500 people as well as high quality leisure facilities including beauty spas.

Reds chairman John Wilkinson hailed the news as proof that the stadium dream was now becoming a reality. He said: "People can see that with the awarding of this contract the plans are starting to really take shape. The initial contract has been awarded to a prestigious company who we feel will manage a successful venture.

"As well as the 208 rooms for people to stay there will also be a health club including a swimming pool which local people can become a member of. We hope Reds supporters will use the facilities and feel the benefits because after all they are our lifeblood."

The hotel is an important part of the Reds' vision for the Barton site which it is hoped will also include a 100,000 sq ft 'Sportino' complex incorporating a casino, restaurant and bars and a 230,000 sq ft retail park.

MacDonald are hoping to benefit from the site's close proximity to the Trafford Centre, Manchester city centre and Manchester Airport.

Red City Developments, the group set up to deal with the stadium plans, chose the operator after considering a strong field of well-known established hotel groups.

Red City Developments managing director Adam Thomas said: "We were all immediately impressed with Macdonald Hotels' proposal - their commitment to quality, style and service is admirable and they regularly set the benchmark for upper four-star conferencing.

"This is another major company showing faith in our development and takes us a step closer to realising our dream of a world class stadium."

Macdonald Hotels have a portfolio of over 60 properties across the UK including establishments in Cardiff and Edinburgh. Managing director Andy Townsend said: "It is clear that the new stadium will be an outstanding addition to the North West and as the hotel operator, we have a fantastic opportunity to contribute our philosophy and experience to this venture."

Rugby fans get into hot water

Tony Howard

21/ 7/2005

SALFORD rugby fans can swap the terraces of the Willows for the luxury of watching their team from a jacuzzi at the new stadium.

Instead of getting wet in the driving Salford rain, Reds fans can watch their beloved team while getting lathered up in a hot tub on one of the roof terraces that will form part of the £10m hotel complex at the City of Salford Stadium.

The idea was the result of a tour of American sports arenas undertaken by the team behind the proposed new Barton site, and they hope the Salford public will use the facilities during matches.

American baseball's Arizona Diamondbacks, from Phoenix, currently offer the service at their Bank One Ball Park and fans enjoy hot tub parties while watching matches.

The hotel, to be run by MacDonald Hotels, will have eight suites with views of the pitch and a further eight will face Barton airport. Those who'd rather have a lie-in will be able to watch the Reds from their beds.

Over 100 of the 208 rooms will have perfect pitch views and Red City Development's Adam Thomas believes it could revolutionise the way rugby league is watched.

He said: "It's all part of an attempt to offer a variety of ways to enhance the match experience. It's unique for this country and I'm sure fans will take advantage of the facilities with weddings and other similar events."

According to Red City no-one need worry about the inclement weather because the hotel's terraced areas will be fully covered from the elements and the design also means no-one else will be able to see in from anywhere else so privacy will be respected.

Mr Thomas said: "The design is fantastic and means the weather and privacy are not a problem. There is something pleasant about being in warm water while outside, as anyone who's swam in heated outdoor pools will know. I think it will be a success."

Apparently some very old archaeological stuff has been found on the site. Hopefully anything significant will be lifted and it won't delay the construction.
