Eloquence schmeloquence. There's no sense in bringing all this up if we're on the same page. I agree. I've seen the convention and visitor's bureau stuff before and while some of it seems outlandish, most of it is true. I agree that it took a relatively small amount of time for L. A. to acheive it's 10 point Alpha status, I believe we got NEXT! It wasn't easy, though- what- with the building of our port from scratch practically and the transport of the water and the luck we've had in the weather and topography. Our situation is what it is; perched at the bottom of a hill ready to race up only to be kept in place now, engines racing, because of the ridiculous sub-prime mess. Culturally, I'll say it again, we rule. Because our culture is one of popular consumption worldwide. You don't have to come here to experience our culture, like you would so almost everywhere else. Ours is recorded, transmitted, broadcast. It's perfectly located between the ancient worlds of Europe and Asia. Los Angeles can chose to concentrate on itself, but unlike the incapability of that other 'magnate', L. A., more often than not, can recreate its storytelling from the vantage point of others. Other locations, other experience. The collective imagination of a free thinking metropolis, with no real concrete ties to anyone. The place to go to and re-invent yourself. Blah blah blah! But it's true, moreso here than anywhere else. People in L. A., I get the feeling, have so much hope just in the product and locale of the place without realizing that, maybe L. A. hasn't 'jelled' yet. It's still soft, malleable, expanding. It doesn't know where it has been and sure as hell doesn't know where it's going, but people are willing to ride. I see L. A. 'arriving' a little later in the century. Once the city figures out how to move its people effectively, that's when you'll see it really take off! Soup's on the sexual orientation thread, I wonder what he's up to....

YES... I love your Cultcha pictures... West, great article. So it seems that our time has finally arrived and once Grand Ave. gets completed I think it will make LA an even bigger cultural magnet.

WTF!?!? ^ Are those folks having a picnic in a cemetary? Is it a day of the dead thing?
