VIENNA - 16th District (Ottakring)

Quote:
This is my newest picture project.
Lots of people know the sights in Vienna's Inner City yet don't know that there are actually 23 districts in my city.
I am going to portray each and every one of the districts in this series to make you familiar with the Real World Vienna.
OTTAKRING - 16th District

Area: 8.67 km²
Pop.: 94,000

Ottakring is a notorious working class district for most people but they usually fail to realize that Ottakring is much more than that. It is a bit run down, yes. It seems neglected in some parts, right. But most of all, it is a vibrant multicultural district that has even got its villas and woods. But I'll let the pics do the talking:

Thaliastraße, one of the main roads in an E-W direction.

Brunnenmarkt, a colourful market:

Typical street scenes. People with cameras seem especially misplaced here.

A park on Richard-Wagner-Platz:

Businesses out of business:

We are still in the very urban eastern part of Ottakring.

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is the essence of Ottakring. An Ottakringer truck that...

...is just departing from Ottakringer brewery, the last remainder of the big Viennese breweries, and a legendary one...:

Johann-Nepomuk-Berger-Platz. Long name, long stories...

If you need beer, any other alcoholic beverages, chips, whatever... You name it, it's there. Ottkringer beer shop.

Contemporary residential architecture. If you look closely, you'll find that even the playground is beer-branded....

Average street scenes:

As much as I love the diversity here, I am not sure if I can approve of trilingual signs...

That's what the 16th District is all about. Mainly. Beeeeeer. Another advice for you in this series: Vienna = Ottakringer. Get one, when you're here (for the EURO, for example.)

What a weather we had that day...

Wattgasse, important N-S throughfare road:

Typical pubs/restaurants:

Two ways of life:

We are approaching the wealthier white-bread part of the district in the west:

The view from Wilheminenberg, a hill at the western end of Ottakring:

A walkway downhill:

Towards Ottakring's center:

Wilheminenberg castle and the vineyards:

The lifestyle of the rich and famous...Viennese, at least.

We don't even need sidewalks up here, everyone's driving anyway. Good day, America...

Flötzersteig incineration plant:

Flötzersteig is actually the name of this road that divides 16.,Ottakring in the north from 14.,Penzing in the south. (Ottakring = left):

Wilheminenspital, one of the most important hospitals in Vienna's west.

Ottakring U-Bahn/S-Bahn station:

Going home:

After three months, this was my first district portray in 2008 and I really hope you enjoyed this city stroll again.

Please comment!

Excellent shots, thank you!

I'm quite surprised by the American styled "no pavement" areas, are they common in Vienna? I never saw any THAT bad when I was in Germany despite staying in little rural towns (Bad Salzig for one).

I absolutely love the trains there, especially the one in last pic. Are those are suburbs trains? I would love to ride on one hopefully this year.

I would say its not really common. The picture you see there is the outermost periphery in the west and a street through a garden settlement. Whereas even there other streets I have seen there do have pavement.

Honestly I dislike those garden settlements, they are like gated communities where everyone has his own little house...

PS:
Glad to see once again a new chapter in this series. Great pics of an interesting district. Looking forward to Hernals

I only see it now... you get Kebabs for as little as 2€ at the Brunnenmarkt? Maybe I should give it a try once...

Wow, the trilingual sign really made me laugh my ass off. So Ottakring today is essentially an immigrant community area?

A quarter of the district's population does not have Austrian citizenship. To this you can add those who do but do not come from an Austrian background.

Not common at all, fortunately! Not even in the far west.

Yup, they are S-Bahn trains. They operate on a few selected routes within Vienna as a supplement to the metro and reach far into the surrounding communities.

The wait is nearly over...

I've heard that 16th bezirk is full of exYugoslavian gastarbeiters and that regular Viennese people avoid it. Is it true?

Nice pics btw.

And you say - "I am not sure if I can approve of trilingual signs". I think they are there because these people are not integrated, their German is so bad that they can't even read the simple street sign.
