أعلنت ''مبادرة مصدر''، التي أطلقتها حكومة أبوظبي من خلال ''مبادلة'' لتوفير حلول طاقة المستقبل، أمس في بيان عن تشكيل مجلس أمناء ''معهد مصدر للعلوم والتكنولوجيا'' برئاسة الفريق أول سمو الشيخ محمد بن زايـــد آل نهيان، ولي عهد أبوظبي نائب القائد الأعلى للقوات المسلحة؛ ورعاية الأمير تشارلز، ولي عهد بريطانيا.

وبحسب البيان سيكون معهد ''مصدر'' الذي يضم مجلس أمنائه 12 عضواً، أول مؤسسة أكاديمية متخصصة في دراسات الطاقة المتجددة على مستوى العالم، تهدف إلى تطوير الجيل التالي من الحلول التقنية للحد من الاعتماد المتنامي للعالم على الوقود الأحفوري.

ويأتي ''معهد مصدر للعلوم والتكنولوجيا'' في صلب جهود ''مبادرة مصدر''، حيث يعمل على تطوير الموارد البشرية والخبرات العلمية الضرورية لنمو وازدهار قطاع الطاقة النظيفة. ومن هذا المنطلق، قامت المبادرة بتشكيل مجلس يضم أكاديميين وقيادات حكومية وشخصيات من المجتمع المدني، لتوجيه دفة تطور المعهد.

وقد تم تأسيس ''معهد مصدر للعلوم والتكنولوجيا'' بمرسوم من صاحب السمو الشيخ خليفة بن زايد آل نهيان، رئيس الدولة ''حفظه الله'' في 18 سبتمبر ،2007 ومن ثم حصل على الترخيص من مجلس أبوظبي للتعليم.

وسيكون ''معهد مصدر'' الذي يجري تطويره بالتعاون مع ''معهد ماساتشوسيتس للتكنولوجيا''، مؤسسة أكاديمية مستقلة غير ربحية تُعنى بالأبحاث تتخذ من أبوظبي مقراً لها، وتركز على العلوم والتكنولوجيا لتحقيق الهدف المنشود بتحويل أبوظبي من اقتصاد يقوم بشكل أساسي على البترول إلى آخر يرتكز إلى التكنولوجيا المستدامة والطاقة المتجددة.

وتأكيداً على دعمه المتواصل لالتزام ''مبادرة مصدر'' بتطوير حلول طاقة المسقبل، قبل سمو الأمير تشارلز الدعوة التي وجهت إليه ليكون راعياً لمعهد مصدر. وسيعمل سموه على دعم جهود ''مصدر'' التعليمية والبحثية خلال السنوات الخمس القادمة.

ويحظى الدور القيادي الذي يمارسه أمير ويلز في دعم قضايا البيئة والتنمية الحضرية المستدامة، بتقدير واحترام كبيرين على مستوى العالم.

وقد تلقى سموه جائزة ''المواطن البيئي العالمي ''2007 في دورتها السنوية العاشرة، من مركز الصحة والبيئة العالمية التابع لكلية هارفرد الطبية، تقديراً لجهوده الدولية المبذولة في سبيل تحسين كفاءة استهلاك الطاقة.

وسيعمل مجلس الأمناء على توجيه مسيرة تطور ''معهد مصدر للعلوم والتكنولوجيا''، وتحديد اتجاه أبحاثه ودراساته. ويضم المجلس ثمانية ممثلين آخرين من دولة الإمارات وهم: سمو الشيخ ذياب بن زايد آل نهيان، رئيس هيئة مياه وكهرباء أبوظبي وعضو المجلس التنفيذي لإمارة أبوظبي وسمو الشيخ عبدالله بن زايد آل نهيان، وزير الخارجية ومعـــالي الشـيخ نـــهيان بن مـــبارك آل نهيان، وزير التعليم العالي والبحث العلمي ومعالي محمد أحمد البواردي، أمين عام المجلس التنفيذي لإمارة أبوظبي ومعالي خلدون خليفة المبارك، رئيس جهاز الشؤون التنفيذية ورئيس شركة ''مبادلة'' وأحمد علي الصايغ، رئيس مجلس إدارة شركة أبوظبي لطاقة المستقبل ''مصدر'' وعبدالله ناصر السويدي، نائب الرئيس التنفيذي لشركة بترول أبوظبي الوطنية ''أدنوك'' والدكتور سلطان أحمد الجابر، الرئيس التنفيذي لشركة أبوظبي لطاقة المستقبل ''مصدر''.

وجرى أيضاً تعيين أربعة أمناء دوليين وهم: السير ريتشارد سايكس، عميد كلية ''إمبيريال كوليدج'' في لندن، ورئيس مجلس الإدارة والرئيس التنفيذي السابق لشركة ''جلاسكو سميثكلاين'' للأدوية والدكتور وليام إيه. والف، البروفيسور المتميز في جامعة فيرجينيا، والرئيس السابق للأكاديمية الوطنية الأميركية للهندسة والدكتور عدنان بدران، رئيس جامعة البتراء - رئيس الوزراء ووزير التعليم الأردني الأسبق، ونائب أمين عام اليونيسكو السابق والدكتور فريد موفينزاده، مدير برنامج تطوير التقنية في ''معهد ماساتشوسيتس للتكنولوجيا''.

ويتعاون ''معهد ماساتشوسيتس للتكنولوجيا'' مع ''معهد مصدر للعلوم والتكنولوجيا'' في عدة مجالات رئيسية هي: وضع استراتيجية تطوير المعهد واختيار وتوظيف أعضاء الهيئة التدريسية وتطوير مناهج الدراسة الجامعية وإجراء الأبحاث المشتركة وتعزيز العلاقات وتشجيع مشاركة القطاع الصناعي في الأبحاث والنشاطات التطويرية للمعهد ودعم تطوير القدرات في المعهد على صعيد الهيكل الإداري والمؤسسي. وقال الدكتور سلطان أحمد الجابر، الرئيس التنفيذي لشركة أبوظبي لطاقة المستقبل ''مصدر'': ''سيكون معهد مصدر للعلوم والتكنولوجيا القلب النابض لمبادرة مصدر، حيث سيعمل على دعم برامجها المتنوعة بالمواهب المؤهلة والحلول المبتكرة. ومن شأن التقنيات المستدامة التي سيقدمها المعهد، أن ترسي معايير جديدة لطريقتنا في تلبية احتياجات العالم من الطاقة.

وسيكون المعهد المحرك الأساسي لجهودنا الرامية إلى تطوير الكوادر البشرية المؤهلة التي ستجعل أبوظبي مقراً عالمياً للإبداع والابتكار في طاقة المستقبل''.

ويشكل ''معهد مصدر للعلوم والتكنولوجيا'' أول مرحلة من عملية تطوير ''مدينة مصدر''، أول مدينة في العالم خالية من الكربون والنفايات والسيارات، وتعمل كليا بالطاقة المتجددة. وسيتم تزويد مباني المعهد بالكهرباء بواسطة ألواح كهروضوئية مثبتة على الأسقف، ومنظومة ألواح شمسية ومحطات هوائية بعيدة. وسيتم تصميم تلك المباني باستخدام أبراج الهواء التي تعمل على تبريد الهواء الخارجي قبل وصوله إلى الوحدات السكنية والمرافق. وستنتشر المساحات الخضراء في مختلف أنحاء حرم المعهد، والتي ستلتقط الرياح الساخنة القادمة من البحر والرياح الباردة القادمة من اليابسة، مما سيساعد في ضبط درجات الحـــرارة في المباني.

وسيوفر ''معهد مصدر للعلوم والتكنولوجيا''، ابتداء من سبتمبر ،2009 برامج دراسية مدتها سنتان بدوام كامل تتيح الحصول على درجة الماجستير في العلوم. وتتكون هذه البرامج من مساقات دراسية محددة وأطروحة تستند إلى بحث علمي، في تخصصات مختلفة بما فيها نظم الهندسة والإدارة، وتقنية المعلومات، وهندسة وعلوم المواد، والهندسة الميكانيكية، والمياه، والبيئة. وسيبدأ المعهد بمنح شهادة الدكتوراه في عام .2011

وتتكون الهيئة التدريسية لمعهد مصدر للعلوم والتكنولوجيا من 14 عضواً يعملون في ''معهد ماساتشوسيتس للتكنولوجيا''، ومن المتوقع أن يضم صفه الدراسي الافتتاحي 100 طالب في عام .2009

وقال الدكتور راسل سي. جونز، رئيس ''معهد مصدر للعلوم والتكنولوجيا'': ''يتسم المعهد بأهمية كبيرة، إذ إنه مشروع سيغير مستقبل الأبحاث في مجالات الطاقة المتجددة والمستدامة. ونفخر بأننا نجحنا في تشكيل مجلس أمناء عالمي المستوى سيشرف على تطوير المعهد ونموه وفق أرقى المعايير العلمية العالمية''.

Very fascinating and exciting project. What's also interesting to know is that Masdar City has a similar population density as New York, with 10'000 people per sqkm. The densest in the world is Cairo, at 37'000 people/sqkm.

Masdar HQ to generate its own power during construction

The Abu Dhabi scheme's 72,000 sq m roof to provide power during the build as well as shade for the worker

The Masdar Headquarters will be the first building in history to generate its own power during construction, according to designer Gordon Gill of AS+GG Architecture, Chicago. The 72,000 sq m roof, which is to contain one of the world's largest building integrated PV displays, will provide energy during building as well as shade for construction workers as they put it together. All aspects of the Masdar City development, Abu Dhabi, are intended to be carbon and waste neutral.

Gill, who designed the project with partner, Adrian Smith, said that architects should take greater interest in construction methods. "[We] need to consider how things are made instead of turning up with an idea and saying, 'build this!' We should be designing better processes as well.

"This client is very open and interested and getting involved and pushing us to do things that are appropriate and reasonable. They are looking at this in a completely holistic way."

The roof and integral cones will provide shading and power generation for the completed building as well. The idea and structure was inspired by palm trees, adept at creating oases and retaining moisture within the average 39 degree Celsius summer heat. The cone and roof structure shades the water from the fountains below, effectively creating a microclimate.

The cones are chamfered at the top and the rush of air over the top creates negative pressure, drawing cool air from the subterranean level through the six-story space. The top of each can be closed off to help provide cross ventilation or in the case of a dust storm.


Angled glass
Meanwhile, the cones themselves, being made from glass angled at 15-22 degrees reflect between 15-20% of the light, crucially reducing thermal gain while letting sufficient light in from beneath the shaded roof to keep the place bright. The cones are at an optimum nine metres apart allowings diffuse sunlight to reach the whole building.

Their shape also adds efficiency to the use of the structure, minimising their extent on grade A office space. Aesthetically, the view from the gardens through the cones to the ground floor fountains will be memorable with a soaring garden layer.

Gill said he was certain the design would work and confirmed that a host of engineers worked on the project and the Masdar HQ was based on "basic ideas of air movement."

The future green credentials of the world’s second most oil hungry nation may rest on this building, designed by Chicago firm Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture (AS + GG). It’s the ‘headquarters’ of Masdar City in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE), billed as the first zero-carbon, zero-waste city. Masdar CEO, Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, CEO, wants to make the settlement a ‘world centre for future energy.’

Masdar says car-free city is the future

A carbon neutral, car-free city fully powered by renewable energy, such as Abu Dhabi's Masdar, is the way forward for the world, the head of the Masdar Initiative told members of the Congress in Washington DC.

CEO Dr Sultan Al Jaber was invited by Congressman Ed Markey, Chairman of the Congressional Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming, to address a hearing titled "Towns in Transition: Planning Communities for a Changing Climate".
