There's evidently some progress starting on site:
![]() ![]() ![]() Sorry about poor quality as these are cell phone pictures. Also as they are hosted on Photobucket I have no idea if they will display for you properly (if at all)! First time I've ever used it. ![]() BG

The photo quality is good (who needs a seperate camera these days ?) and you have obviously got the hang of uploading.
Hopefully the Catterpillar is levelling the ground for foundation work or it is making a new BMX track ! |

Thanks, I normally use my own FTP with thumbnails linking to the full-size images but I can't upload to that from here unfortunately. I could do with setting up a new server so I have no restrictions on capacity and where I can administer it from. Nice to know it works anyway
![]() My old Nokia 6111 from a few years back has an excellent camera by the way, lovely clear, bright, sharp pictures, but that blew its regulator apart and I still haven't bothered to fix it! BG

I have looked into this site. I am not sure if it is the Brewin tower. Anyone remember the first pictures of the green and white Code building? It had a 4 storey part to the side of it. Confused? Do you see it on the right of the current building?

The first picture in Post 81 is the site of the pile driver, this is where the tower will be. The dig-out photographed from further up Eastern Boulevard is presumably the basement area of the 4-storey section.

The Upperton Rd building was planned to be tall, but its final incarnation isn't. 8 storeys barely qualifies as mid-rise.
As for Brewin Tower, this is attracting interest isn't it ![]() BG

I have to say that when i first came to this forum anything over 4 storeys was keenly anticipated. There was a feeling that the skyline at last was going to be revitalised but as the years have past, bland cheap designs and poor refurbishments to existing tall buildings have once again soured the high-rise ambitions of Leicester. (if it ever had any that is ?) |

I can't say I had much enthusiasm at the time I joined either, having recently witnessed 4 of our then 14 or so high-rise buildings demolished and then the council lauding demolition of SGT. Had that gone, along with Elizabeth House, I'm sure an excuse would have been found to get rid of Cardinal in keeping with the tide of "opinion" turning against tall buildings, the only ones left in the City Centre being 60 Charles Street and the Council headquarters. Any hope of anything tall would have been squandered indefinitely.
There were even plans to demolish the remaining towers in Highfields. As it stands, there is still the prospect of our existing buildings being matched or even exceeded in height. People are realizing that land is finite. Let's just keep our fingers crossed that the quality is decent, as this will encourage more and better developments in future. BG

An update from today. I should have gone round a bit earlier as the low sun made it a bit difficult to get reasonable photos. The bases of the upright columns can now be seen as well as the approximate shape of the structure:

The area looks quite small for such a large building? Looks can be deceptive I suppose.

Can anyone explain to me why they haven't dug down, i would have thought it was common economical practice these days to bury parking/facilities below ground?
Or is it just more cost cutting on behalf of the developers? |
