The yards are somewhat below street level, at least at the eastern end.

UPDATE:

I can speak firsthand that the first phase of work, building of a new bathtub and decking over the train tracks so that towers 1 and 2 can be built, will start in september.

Yeah, what has to happen is that the old retaining walls, that have been there since the beginning of time, have to be cut out and hoisted to the street by crane. This happens at both the north and south walls.

Then a new retaining wall and bathtub is constructed in order to meet the load requirements of the towers. inside of the new bathtub area they drive piles and pour grade beams in order to carry the load of the concrete deck spans. The rest of the rail is structural steel which is erected after the concrete grade beams are complete. The precast deck creates the plaza area of the new development. The towers will be cored either on terra firma at the corners of the site, or at the subgrade train track level.

Then a structural steel temporary platform is constructed as a working deck for the massive gantry crane that will move the deck sections into place.

I think the deck sections are made up of 40 precast concrete pieces, which are post tensioned together and weigh about 52 tons each. so the gantry will be launching sections of deck that are about 2000tons each!

Yes.

The Hudson Yards sit between 10th av. and 12th av. and 30th str and 33rd str,

while,

Brookfields site is encased within 9th av and the same streets.

Both projects need the decking of the currently open railtracks, that's about the only thing these projects have in common and that they gonna be uneven twins.

It's gonna be amazing to see these 4 giants from one of the named streets and looking up. This new CBD is going to be NY's version of the "tallest block".

And there is a lkot to come north of the HY site, like the Girasole tower, and a few other supertalls and skyscrapers.

I simply can't wait to see all that materialized.

I agree. There are many sites in this area which are zoned for well over 2m sf of space.

Hudson is going for a more traditional decking style of columns+beams (steel or concrete) and poured or precast on top.

Brookfield is truely using a bridge span, it is going to be awesome to watch that go in.

I know an architect on Hudson and showed him the bridge span method, he is now showing it to their structural engineer (saved brookfield like 300mm over the traditional method).

make sure you guys visit the 51 Astor Place thread in General Urban Development (mid June for steel).

Yes, it'll look amazingly densed together since they are only 1 avenue away from each other O.O

And not to mention this fugly 20 story building directly in between them will be demolished soon enough and who knows what will go there.

Plus unknowns to the north. This 300m+ cluster is going to make wtc look tame in comparison.
