Because they haven't figured the final configuration of the space. There are many different scenarios, and if Credit Suisse, Time Warner, or Newscorp signed a huge lease, the towers would be configured to their needs. Alternatively, if Brookfield decided to put 500 apartments, and a 500 room hotel in the first tower, together with, for example, a 1.5m sf office component, the first tower would look very different from either of these.

my fear is that they will spread the space out between many towers which will be shorter instead of fewer tower but supertall.

but that may not be the case clearly.

Since they're introducing a large residential component, it will be much taller. A 500,000 sf residential/hotel tower is much taller than a 500,000 sf office tower.

here is an isometric view of the steel trestle portion of the south (left) and north (right) walls that will carry the precast platform. The rest of the wall will be concrete capped caissons.

the precast bridge spans create the plaza between the new towers.

Update:

Demolition of the north and south retaining walls that border the rail yard will start in the next few weeks.

This demolition will allow the installation of a capping beam on both sides of the site. The capping beams will be a mixture of caissons and steel trestles that support the future post-tensioned deck spans that create the new plaza.

The capping beams also will support the rails system that the precast launching gantry will operate on.

As the demolition work moves east from the west side of the site, a temporary protective platform will be built at the west side of the site. This platform will be the staging area for the precast spans. This work will start sometime around the winter holidays.

The gantry crane will be assembled and begin work sometime in the early spring.

After the new plaza is complete, work on the subgrade utilities will begin and possibly foundation work on the first tower. It really depends on how everything shakes out.

I will provide ample photos. This will be a very exciting project.

Hmph, the towers look considerably different than in other renders. They are both the height of the lower one and their roofs are straight, not curved. Though I dunno which design is the latest

They still look like they're about to topple over...
Is 430 W 33 that hideous brown building with the sloped sides?

Um, which one do you mean? The only sloped building I see is the blue one right in front of the towers?

They are medicore in height, but then again, even 371 meters is medicore too. On the other hand, they look better as twins and the flat roof design is far better. They won't be a new NYC icon, but they will still contribute to the area. I think their design is far better than the Hudson Yards

A 100 meter tall building would stand out in my city...

How far will these be from the proposed Hudson Yards towers?

a 371 meter building is mediocre height? Are you smoking crack? That would be the tallest building in the world outside of Asia and USA.
