If we take all currently built, under construction and proposed buildings a 371 meter building wouldn't even make it into the top 50. For me everything below 420 meters is medicore in these times

Actually even though I said 420 meters I still regard the size of 1WTC as the absolute minimum a tower needs to have to have a truly impressive height. Everything below the height of 1WTC is medicore

Which was the tallest building you stood in front of?

I'm pretty sure Kanto has never seen a tall building in his life.

Chicago has three supertalls that are hundreds of feet shorter than 1WTC, and they're as imposing as any.

Everything above 300m is ******* tall for anyone, period. I remember looking up at John Hancock Center in Chicago and being in complete awe that humans are able to build structures that soar as tall as that...and JHC is 'only' 321m.

JHC is 344 meters the observatory is 321 meters

To say that anything shorter than sears or the wtc is "mediocre" is beyond ridiculous, what's the tallest building you've seen in your life Kanto?

Go stand at ESB's 320 meter observation deck, look to the street and tell me it's "mediocre"

I've been to tall spots before. I've seen the city I lived in from a height of 375 meters from a TV tower on a mountain 300 meters above the city. I've been watching cities from mountains that were a kilometer higher than those cities, so I know height. And besides, subjective feelings aren't what decides whether a building is medicore or impressive in height. The comparison to other buildings is what decides that

lol, you can't compare that with standing in front of a tower in real life

TV Towers are not as visually aweing (I know it's not a word) as say something like the ESB or even any other skyscraper. Stand directly in front of the ESB and look up and you will see how imposing it is. I would say that at times even 200-250m buildings can be imposing but 300m really are.

It doesn't matter. Design is sometimes much more important than height.

@Kanto btw are you referring to that diamond-shaped TV tower?

Yup, I'm referring to that one

As to what I can compare and not, that doesn't matter. To determine whether a tower's height is impressive or not one can't rely on "feeling". One has to rely on height data. For somebody who has never left a village in a flat area without mountains even a 60 meter building will be awe inspiring, but to somebody living in Burj Khalifa even the Tokyo Sky Tree will look unimpressive. That's why I base my opinion on data

I've seen all the tallest buildings in the United States, but Detroit's Renaissance Center is still unmistakably huge. Houston's tallest building is still a behemoth, as is the US Steel Tower in Pittsburgh. These building don't cease to be impressive because someone else built one taller. It's not just a number. I still maintain that Kanto has never seen a skyscraper in his life.

i think it depends on your location if your surrounded by tall buildings like in new york, the ones that stand out are the giant ones like esb and 1wtc, but if your ina city like mine, the only skyscraper here is 300 feet and i always look up and it looks massive to me, considering its really alone lol
