^Construction of the platform spanning the tracks has started. That has to be done before the towers can be built.

Brookfield will build the towers on terra firma and does not require the platform. The landscaped plaza with retain will be situated upon the platform. Brookfield has stated that they regard the platforms as a practical necessity because no one will lease space in a tower situated next to a multistory pit over railroad tracks. If they had a tenant, they could build the tower and the platform simultaneously.

Brookfield is well-aware that no one will lease space here until Related leases the HY. The HY space is a lot cheaper and nicer. Brookfield is simply preparing for a general rebound in office leasing when the economy is quite strong in a few years. At that time, Brookfield, Vornado's 15 Penn, S&L's Grand Central Tower, Extell's One HY, and Silverstein's 2 WTC all will be competing for tenants.

Where does the Grand Central Tower have its thread? I couldn't find it. Is it a new proposal?

Quite a small site I'd say. Will some buildings be demolished for this?

It just seems so, this site is 1/4 the size of the WTC.

I know the WTC site from photos that were taken from far higher than from where this photo was taken from, so the different vantage angles might explain why this site appears so small in this pic to me, I guess

The railway tracks make it look much smaller in the last picture.

Because of the level difference you cannot see that the railway tracks appear to be less wide then the parking lot/building site at the front of the picture. But in reality the tracks are twice as wide, this pulls the whole building site together making it smaller in appearance.

But nevertheless, the actual site that won't be on top of the railway tracks is actually quite small.

I went across the street to measure this for you guys. I walked it off so the measurements are close but not 100% accurate.
The 33rd street side is 255'
the first lot (bottom right of photo) 105'
the rest totals 315' but I couldn't figure out where the tracks ended because of the plywood wall.

A great post by NYguy on SSP showing the planned +300M/984ft tall twin towers!! It will be like a smaller version of the original twin towers! NY is taking the skyscraper world by storm and shows no signs of slowing!

Went by the site earlier, they are active on both the north and south sides. Also, they've done something to the sides on the inside where the trains pass through,
in obvious preparation for construction. It's the beginning of the end to this bit of daylight when you enter or leave Penn Station, but the beginning of a new and exciting chapter for Manhattan and the west side....

Both are +300M in that render since according to google earth the short building directly accoss from the southern tower is 81M tall and the South Tower looks over 4 times taller than it.

to be honest, I hope the design of the towers stays like that. The West side will need some simplicity once the Hudson Yards towers are completed. I hope we get twin supertalls, that would be awesome in such a small place

at least 2-3 years away from even considering a tower foundation here.

as a status update.

the platform deck work is getting underway. The retaining walls to the north and south of the tracks are starting to be demolished. Unfortunately, due to the active tracks, the hoarding work can only be done at night and during the weekend outages. This makes the project schedule for this phase very long.

the platform will be erected by a precast launcher that you would see in bridge construction. The launcher and the precast will operate and sit on a concrete and steel capping beam that will span the site from west to east from dyer ave to 9th ave.

foundations will go in for the steel portions of the capping beam on the north and south side as well as for the temporary protective platform that will act as a construction platform for the precast spans. precast segments will be joined on that platform, tensioned with cables, then hoisted by the launcher on their bearing pads along the capping beam. there are 16 precast spans, each will take 2-3 months to assemble and place.

I will provide photos when i get on site.
