Looks like the new bits are just plastered on top the concrete. I really hope that the Hudson Yards doesn't end up with such a lazy neighbor.
I think this looks very good. I actually like that fat lowrise and even more so with the reclad. It would be a pitty to demolish it.

You have weird taste. That building, if you could even call it that, is a ******* monstrosity, lipstick applied or not.

It could still be an interim measure, I suppose. Too valuable a site to leave like that forever.

That's ridiculous. This site will be redeveloped in time. This is a short-term fix.

I hope the rumors about a consideration for demolishing that building are true. It's a waste of space and it stood out as hideous when I visited NYC.
As for the towers, I think they should be redesigned. NYC has more than enough twin glass buildings, if you include Hudson Yards.

The cost of demolition must be high and messy and that might be a fly in the ointment for your plan. in these economic times I would say that they won't be demolishing this for at least another 10 years since the renovation would not be planned otherwise.

Then I guess we can only hope it will at least look better, and become a better working space. There have been many old buildings that looked great with new cladding.

I don't see how you can feel that way. Even if it had a design that most liked it is totally inappropriate in the middle of NY's grandest development. This is made even worse with the potential for premier tower being squandered.

Yeah, that squat, hopelessy ugly P.O.S. should at least survive through the shooting of the sequel to this:

It won't be demolished for another ten years, and neither will Javits, but both will be in time.

Why? 5m sf of office space and millions more of residential are about to begin construction in the Yards. No other city in the first world is constructing anything on this scale. They can't construct 20m sf of space at once -- not even in the financial capital.

^ yes

id imagine they are letting it be for the time being because its leased.

why mess with cash flow when you are about to start a new development.

plus, the work involved in demolishing it and building the new structure is nuts. just based on what is going to be involved with the railroad to get the platform deck up is bad enough. the schedule is so long and the means and methods are so atypical that it would be a mega project on its own.

I like them, but I'm surprised they now look similar in height?
I thought there was to be a significant difference in height between the 2.

Yup, originally one tower was supposed to be 371 meters and the second one 285 meters but now both look like 285 meters.

I don't know the slight lean with them being the same height looks more like an engineering mistake rather than a design; that's what bugs me the most i think. i dislike the stub building in front but its honestly 10x more bearable with that re clad at least.

right. The only thing it is good for is it can offer some nice webcam angles of the development around.

As to what I can compare and not, that doesn't matter. To determine whether a tower's height is impressive or not one can't rely on "feeling". One has to rely on height data. For somebody who has never left a village in a flat area without mountains even a 60 meter building will be awe inspiring, but to somebody living in Burj Khalifa even the Tokyo Sky Tree will look unimpressive. That's why I base my opinion on data
"Impressive" is an inherently subjective term. It's about how much something leaves an impression on you. It's not necessarily calculable. It's like judging whether a painting is impressive by measuring how much paint was used. There are objective superlatives ("tallest", "oldest", etc) and there are subjective ones ("most beautiful", "most impressive", etc.). You don't find anything shorter than 1WTC impressive? Fine, that's your opinion - your impression. But you can't say "To determine whether a tower's height is impressive or not one can't rely on "feeling". One has to rely on height data." If I stand in front of a 35 meter tall bell tower and it looks tall and imposing and I'm impressed by it, then it's height is impressive to me.
