Agree, but the reason why they are keeping and just renovating it is because it will be used as a selling point for potential tenants.

A corporation would lease in either MWN or MWS Tower's and have the option to lease even more space next door at 450W33rd at a much cheaper rate. Manhattan West project can only offer that type of options/luxury to lure potential tenants compared to the rest of the Hudson Yards. That could give them advantage over 3 Hudson Blvd.

The big wigs get a view of ESB and the Hudson Yards while everyone else is in the bunker. Yeah I can see that happening, good point.

This will be razed in 20 years. I highly doubt that the new commercial towers at MW will rise any time soon.

Awesome structure...you can really get a sense of it's massive scale when you notice the ladder

Repost of what they planned to do:

Apparently blue glass can fix anything.
I don't think these towers will look boring, but I would welcome the demise of that small monstrosity in favor of more air rights for the new towers.

Would be cool to have a time-lapse of this machine at work when it's done.

Excuse my ignorance but what on earth is that? It's HUGE. I've never seen that before even on the the biggest of skyscrapers.

I think these towers will only be 935 feet each now but I may be mistaken, I don't think we even know the final design yet.

They use it to build the platform where the towers will be build on.

That platform will cover the last remaining open excavation of the Pennsylvania Rail Road's excavation for the now-truncated NY Penn Station. This was the excavation blasted into the Manhattan bedrock that created the track/platform level of NY's Penn Station. TigerRocket has posted a 1905 film showing a few minutes of the excavation 108 years ago, with numerous steam powered machines doing their stuff.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kON0IKPjOfQ

The open cut built in the 190xs has been since covered up the Farley Post Office & it's extension (covering 8th to 9th Ave), the construction of Dyer AVe. for the Lincoln Tunnel in the 1930s & the "AP" building (Brookfield own the "AP" building) in the late 1960s. This deck section will stretch east from Dyer Ave to 9th Ave. It will reduce significantly the daylight you can see from the west end of the Penn Station platforms and the eastern Hudson Yards platform should all but eliminate it.

the equipment is a launching gantry crane that will pick entire lengths of post tensioned precast spans that will bridge the yard.

it was custom made for this project and will be scrapped afterwards.

for some idea of what it will do. the precast spans will weight around 2500 tons, including the launcher it will be around 4000 tons moving at one time.

in 6 months we should see a couple spans completed.

It'd be nice if there was a webcam to watch it all.

Are these towers still supposed to be very different in heights (1216 and 935 feet, as the thread title suggests)? The video just above suggests otherwise.
