I am not liking this rickshaw trend, it's a cheap cop-out in place of real cars.

I think it's a good option until a proper road network is in place. Imagine the traffic if all those rickshaws were cars.

Those 3 wheeled blue taxis seem common all over Ethiopia no ? I've seen those represented in many Ethiopian city galleries. Has anyone rode on one of those ?

I don't know about common, but I think all regional main cities have them. Not Addis Ababa though. I have never tried them in Ethiopia, but I've tried similar "tok-toks" in Thailand. They are everywhere in that country.

I love how common bicycles are in Bahir Dar. Most people in Addis Ababa probably can't even ride a bycycle lol.

I actually hate those "Bajaj / tricycles" - hate their color and hate the canvas. Wait for a copule of years, they will become a moving shanty or old slam. I am glad they are banned from Addis - we don't need an African Bombay. I heard Nazret / Adama is also considering to limit their numbers. With poor road infrastructure, they are notorious for creating unnecessary traffic jams. However, I support if they are exclusively used to replace donkeys - they should be banned as a public transportation.

Here is an example - a delivery van.

I hate them but I think they are an ugly and noisy necessity. Unless you are ok with horse drawn transportation you will have to accept them for now. Those horse drawn Gari's are actually manageable, except the horse excrement, they are clean and quiet. You make special gravel ways for them out of the way and they would serve a purpose. The bajaj are noisy, uncomfortable and dirty. .

Annoying as they are, I think the bajajas are going to be fixtures of smaller cities for sometimes. I remember over ten years ago in Dire Dawa we used to pay 1birr for a taxi (unlike addis there is no short and long range service) and that is expensive even for addis, way expensive at that time. Back then people were using Peugeot 404 for most part. However this model of Peugeot is very old and some people were making the transition to toyota (kest, lift back...). With the cost of oil increasing and people getting poorer not able to afford to pay more, the taxi drivers were in a difficult place. Then some body introduced them to bajaj and these ugly things are all over the place. But on the up side we still pay 1 birr. Yes, they to a lesser degree behave like "GarI" but mainly they replaced the formal taxi at least in Dire Dawa. I couldn't stand them but I don't see other mode of transport competing with them for small cities (unless, people get richer and their tastes ....).

New hotel u/c - tallest building in Bahir Dar

Quote:
Bahir Dar Town, located 477km from Addis Abeba and the capital city of Amhara Regional State, will soon see the completion of its tallest building yet. The construction of the building, which is being built by Tileksew Gedamu on the shore of Lake Tana to serve as a hotel, has already reached the 10th floor, surpassing the three six-storey buildings that used to be the tallest.
Anyone know the name of this hotel?

Don't know where in BD this is but I like the monument along with the Amhara Regional State flag (its tongue twisting to say the name of the sate in a whole sentence)

Is that monument supposed to symbolize something? The top reminds me of something else.

About the second pic.. I was thinking that they might be federal police, but they shouldn't be wearing the "amhara flag".
