Hypermarkets urged to increase percentage of local goods sold
By June RamleePublished: 2009/09/08

MAJOR hypermarkets have been asked to increase the percentage of Malaysian goods available on their shelves to 30 per cent by 2012 from the present 9 percent.

Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said he wants the four hypermarkets, Carrefour, Giant, Tesco and Jusco operating in the country to increase the number of Malaysians products by at least 20 per cent next year.

"We hope that more Malaysians will buy Malaysian products by introducing such as move," said Ismail at the launch of the 1Malaysia "Promas (Product Malaysia) 2010" in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

The minister said Malaysian products are of high quality and less expensive than its exported counterparts.

However, he said local products are still struggling to find a hold among Malaysian consumers due to their unattractive packaging which many say has failed to grab the buyers' attention.

"We have received many complaints from traders that our products packaging needs improvement ... another complaint is that it is not delivered consistently to these hypermarkets," he added.

Ismail also urged Malaysian traders to be more creative and not keep manufacturing the same products that others have already ventured into.

"Don't always opt for the same things. For example, potato chips, there are more than 50 companies producing the same item, these hypermarkets can only take in 10 types of the same products but not more than that," he added.

Citing another example, he said "Halal Cat Food" was one of the products that made it into the hypermarkets due to its uniqueness.

Wal-Mart has no plans to open hypermarket in Malaysia

It plans to expand in China and India

THE world’s largest retailer, Wal-Mart Stores Inc, wants to expand in China and India but has no plans to open hypermarkets in Malaysia, said chairman S. Robson Walton.

“We are focusing on the larger markets and China is a big opportunity for us,’’ he said.

In India, he said the retailer was “just getting started’’ where there were great opportunities over the longer term.

“We are planting the seeds that will grow but that will be some five to 10 years,’’ he said, adding that for Malaysia, it was “not so soon.”

Walton did not give details on the expansion into India and China.

Investing abroad has not been an easy exercise for Wal-Mart even though it now operates in 15 countries.

It has learnt many lessons but the most important was about being respectful to local customers, conditions and regulations, said Walton who was awarded this year’s Malcolm S. Forbes Lifetime Achievement Award.

He is the fourth recipient after steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal (2008), LAS Vegas Sands Corp chairman and CEO Sheldon G. Adelson (2007) and Hong Kong tycoon Li Ka-Shing (2006).

This award is presented to honour a lifetime of achievements in entrepreneurial capitalism and is the highest form of recognition Forbes Inc bestows on a single individual.

Walton is the son of Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton.

Together with his CEOs, the chairman has grown the company’s revenue from US$67bil to US$400bil over 17 years.

Wal-Mart operates in 15 countries with 8,100 retail units, has over 200 million customers a week, employs over 2.1 million associates worldwide and deals with hundreds of suppliers globally.

“We resonate with people and save people’s money so that they can live a better life, more so in challenging times,’’ Walton said.

Despite the turnaround in the global economy, sales remain tough but Asia will lead the recovery, he added.

“Recovery will be a slow one and there are no immediate returns. It does create (keen) competition. (In the crisis), we see more customers buying health care products, drugs and medicines, clothes for their children but not for themselves, and food to cook rather than eat out,’’ Walton said, adding that he saw opportunities in the healthcare business but did not elaborate.

Sustainability has become a key part of the company and that effort is driven top down.

The enviromental initiative started four years ago and Wal-Mart has achieved cost savings by re-packaging, lighting and installation of auxiliary power units in its truck fleet.

They work with vendors that are committed to conservation.

Walton is chairman of the Centre for Environmental Leadership in Business.

Like Wal-Mart, Malaysian-born Dr Enki Tan, who is chairman of Giti Tire Pte Ltd and a member of the Conservation International, is focused on sustainability.

His company has also recorded substantial savings by going green.

Instead of using coal to fire generators to produce steam, it has substituted it with rice husks and that has helped the company save cost by 30%.

“Green is an area of opportunity and there a lots of opportunity on revenue and cost savings,’’ Tan said.

Dr M: Learn Japanese style of business
Sunday October 4, 2009

Guest-of-honour: Dr Mahathir being welcomed at Aeon’s 25th anniversary
celebration last night. Flanking him are Aeon Co (M) Bhd chairman Datuk
Abdullah Mohd Yusof (right) and Nagahisa.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians can learn a lot from the Japanese way of retailing, said former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

“I have always admired the way Japanese present and wrap their products,” he said.

Dr Mahathir lauded the success of Aeon Co (M) Bhd which opened its first retail store here 25 years ago under the Look East Policy.

He said he wanted to bring a Japanese retail business here to teach Malaysians the Japanese style of business ethics and presentation of goods.

Dr Mahathir said Aeon (formerly known as Jaya Jusco Stores Bhd) was doing very well in this country.

“It seems not long ago that Jusco opened its supermarket in Dayabumi which was my favourite place before.

“It has come a long way with over 20 branches and turnover in the billions,” he said at Aeon’s 25th anniversary celebration here last night. Aeon has 25 stores in the country.

Earlier in the day, 2,500 volunteers and staff planted 25,000 trees at the Paya Indah Wetlands in conjunction with the silver jubilee.

Dr Mahathir expressed hope that Aeon, which had helped small businesses market their products, would continue to contribute to the development of small and medium businesses while helping Malaysians upgrade their business methods.

“My admiration for the Japanese is almost boundless. I am quite sure they reciprocate by transferring skills and technology to Malaysia,” he added.

Meanwhile, Aeon Co Ltd Japan chairman and adviser Takuya Okada thanked Dr Mahathir for inviting him to open the retail store in Malaysia back in 1983.

“We owe our success here to him. Without him, we will not be here today,” he said.

Aeon Co (M) Bhd managing director Nagahisa Oyama said they were planning to expand their stores to the east coast, Sabah and Sarawak in the near future.

Oyama said 400,000 trees had been planted to date, adding that trees were planted each time a new store was opened.

He thanked the local community, customers, business partners, shareholders and staff for their support throughout the years.
