Tesco expects six new stores to contribute 15% to revenue
By Bernama
Tuesday, 18 May 2010 19:21

KUALA LUMPR: Tesco Stores (M) Sdn Bhd expects its six new stores in Malaysia to contribute 15% to its revenue in the financial year ending Feb 28, 2011, its Chief Executive Officer Tjeerd Jegen said.

The hypermarket operator registered a revenue of RM3.5 billion in the 2009/2010 financial year.

Jegen said two stores were opened earlier this year with one in Rawang, Selangor and the other in Bukit Indah, Johor.

"The rest of the four stores will be opened in Melaka, Kepong (Kuala Lumpur), Old Klang Road (Kuala Lumpur) and in Kulim (Kedah).

"We will be investing about RM80 million to RM90 million per store subjecting to the size," Jegen told reporters after the launching of ‘Easy by RHB’ at Tesco Ampang here Tuesday, May 18.

Tesco currently has 33 stores nationwide.

Asked whether the company was looking at a listing, Jegen said Tesco was happy with its partnership with Sime Darby and not looking at a listing.

"We do not believe that listing will help us at the moment," he elaborated. -- Bernama

Probably the same GIANT or TESCO. It will be interesting if Korea's Lotte or America's WalMart comes in.

Malaysia's mass-grocery market is quite small, or rather very small, compared to our peers and our policy requires a Bumiputera local partner, which is frankly quite "sux". Besides that, retailers must buy alot of products from our small SMEs of Malaysia.

Other than that, I think Carrefour in Malaysia was not profitable for many many years until after 8 years in Malaysia, since 2002. (Yet their prices seem to be higher than GIANT and TESCO?)

Carrefour Malaysia & Singapore Deny Store Closures

KUALA LUMPUR, July 7 (Bernama) -- Carrefour Malaysia and Singapore said today that it is business as uusual for all its stores here and in the republic.

Denying any store closure in Malaysia and in Singapore, the hypermarket said in a statement on Wednesday that four Carrefour outlets opened for business in Malaysia this year and another four hypermarkets were slated to open by year-end.

Carrefour was responding to recent reports that the French retail giant was in early stages of selling its units in Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore which could raise up to US$1 billion and planned on shutting down its operations in these three countries.

Mydin To Open 14 More Branches Nationwide

SUBANG JAYA, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- Mydin Mohamed Holdings Bhd plans to open 14 more branches nationwide with gross development value of RM1.6 billion in two years.

Its managing director, Datuk Ameer Ali Mydin, said the company has bought 14 parcels of land worth RM165 million nationwide to build hypermarkets.

"We are looking at various options to fund this plan, such as internally-generated funds, bank borrowings or build and lease," he told reporters after the launch of AmBank-MyKasih Community Programme at Mydin Hypermarket USJ Subang Jaya here Wednesday.

Ameer Ali said the new hypermarkets would be built in Kuching, Kota Kinabalu, Sungai Petani, Bukit Mertajam, Kota Baharu, Kuantan, Johor Baharu, Kuala Terengganu, Seremban and Kajang.

"Our immediate plan is to add 20 mini market branches this year and another 50 by 2011," he said.

Currently, Mydin has 57 branches nationwide, which include four hypermarkets, 18 emporiums, two bazaars, 24 mini markets ("MyMydin"), three 24-hour convenience stores ("My Mart") and six franchises ("Mydin Mart").

Ameer Ali said Mydin expected sales to increase to RM1.6 billion this year from RM1.35 billion last year in line with the uptrend in the domestic economy.

"The healthier the nation, the better our economy will perform and as a result there will be better sales," he said.

He said Klang Valley business operations continued to contribute to higher sales growth, followed by Melaka.

Ameer Ali urged small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to produce a wide variety of products and supply to the company.

He said SMEs should look into handicrafts, garments and accessories.

"So far we are happy with SME products that met the criteria but they must look at other products needed by the market," he said.

Carrefour getting out of Malaysia: Minister

French retail giant Carrefour plans to sell its business in Malaysia, a minister said, amid speculation the firm will also offload its Singapore and Thai stores and exit Southeast Asia altogether.

“We heard that Carrefour is considering divesting. It is for the purpose of rationalisation of their overseas business,” Deputy Minister of International Trade & Industry Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir said late Monday.

“They want to sell their business (in Malaysia),” he said, adding that “other hypermarkets are keen to take over” Carrefour’s 23 stores in the country.

“There are many suitors,” he said.

Low Ngai Yuen, Carrefour’s marketing and communications director, declined to respond to the comments.

Yeah Kim Leng, group chief economist with financial research firm RAM Holdings, said Carrefour’s impending departure from Southeast Asia had been well flagged.

“The news has been around for some time. It is an open secret that Carrefour wants to pull out from Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore. They have put feelers out to the industry on their plan,” he said.

Yeah said Carrefour wanted to consolidate its business and move its resources to the booming Indian market.

“It is not surprising for them to move to India. The middle class segment is a large expanding group,” he said.

The New Straits Times newspaper last month reported that Carrefour had put a tag of US$1.0 billion collectively on its business in Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.

Yeah said the growth of the hypermarket industry in Malaysia was not spectacular compared to the opportunities presented by the fast-growing Indian market but that it remained profitable.

“The hypermarket industry in Malaysia is dynamic and very competitive,” he said.

“Given the growth potential in the region, we will likely see other players buying Carrefour. Players that exit will be able to find suitors.”

Other players in the Malaysian market who are possible buyers of the Carrefour outlets include Britain’s Tesco, Japan’s Jusco, and Giant, which is owned by the Dairy Farm group. -- AFP

Ramai minat beli Carrefour

Oleh Helmy Abd Rahman

2010/08/25

Bulan lalu, The New Straits Times melaporkan, Carrefour meletakkan harga jualan AS$1 bilion bagi semua perniagaannya di Malaysia, Singapura dan Thailand.
