Supermart to pull in more crowd

THE RM300mil 1st Avenue shopping mall in Penang is expected to enhance its monthly traffic by about 30% with the completion of Carrefour Market in June.

1st Avenue director Datuk Sonny Ho said the current monthly traffic since the shopping mall’s opening in November last year was around 500,000.

“With the addition of Carrefour in June, we expect the monthly traffic to increase by about 30%,” he said in an interview.

Ho said it would be the first Carrefour outlet on the island, adding that a shopping mall was never complete without a supermarket as most people preferred to shop for groceries during their weekend outings.

Located on the fourth floor, Carrefour Market is a supermarket which occupies about 35,629sq ft. It is currently undergoing renovation and scheduled to open in June.

Ho said the tenancy agreement, which was for 15 years, was signed with Carrefour Malaysia chief executive officer Stephane Deutsch early this month.

Besides riding on Carrefour’s attraction, 1st Avenue also has the ‘Underground’ and ‘Cloud 8’ as crowd pullers.

While ‘Underground’ specialises in trendy and fashionable products for the younger generation, ‘Cloud 8’ offers a variety of entertainment as well as food and beverage outlets.

Currently, 1st Avenue is negotiating with some 20 international and local brand names in the fashion, food and beverage, health and beauty, and bookshop industries to come in as tenants.

The shopping mall, with a net lettable built-up area of 400,000sq ft, is about 80% occupied, which translates into some 280 stores.

Among the fashion brand names in the shopping mall are Coach, Cotton On, Skechers and Giordano. 1st Avenue is jointly developed by Asian Retail Mall II Limited, Belleview Group and Lion Group.

Tesco to invest RM300mil
By LEE KIAN SEONG Friday April 29, 2011
http://biz.thestar.com.my/news/story...&if_height=589

KEPONG: Tesco Stores (M) Sdn Bhd plans to open three new stores in six months with a total investment of between RM240mil and RM300mil.

Chief executive officer Tjeerd Jegen said the investment per outlet would be between RM80mil to RM100mil and the stores would be in Penang, Old Klang Road in Kuala Lumpur and Seri Iskandar in Perak.

“We opened 39 stores in Malaysia in 10 years. One of our key strategies is to make Tesco accessible to all customers and we want Tesco to exist everywhere in Malaysia,” he told a press conference after the launch of its Quick Q yesterday.

Since Tesco opened its doors in 2002, he said Tesco had invested over RM4.5bil in the Malaysian economy, adding that the company employed more than 14,000 Malaysians.

“Tesco is now as bullish as ever on the prospects of the Malaysian retail sector. This is due to the continued economic growth and prosperity, buoyed by sound economic reforms, robust consumer confidence and political stability,” he said.

He said the company also planned to transform 150 retail shops under the Transformasi Kedai Runcit (Tukar) project that initiated by the Government.

Tesco together with other hypermarket operators are collaborating with the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry in the Tukar project which aims to modernise the traditional retail shop and increase its level of competitiveness.

The operators will take on the role of consultants to help give a new lease of life to traditional retail outlets in terms of preparation, training and others.

Tesco Stores, the joint-venture company between Tesco Plc and Sime Darby Bhd, is also celebrating its 10th successful year in Malaysia this year. The company will offer customers discounts and promotions this weekend in conjunction with its anniversary celebrations.

It launched its Quick Q in all its 39 stores nationwide. It is an initiative to aggressively reduce queuing time for customers at its check-out counters.

Tesco plans to open 6 more hypermarkets
By Kamarul Yunus Published: 2011/04/29
http://www.btimes.com.my/Current_New...epong/Article/

KEPONG: Tesco Stores (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (Tesco Malaysia) plans to open six new hypermarkets this year, with expected investment reaching at least RM480 million.

Its chief executive officer Tjeerd Jegen said it would continue to do this but the number would depend on the government's approvals.

"As far as we are concerned, we want to open up many stores, including in Sabah and Sarawak within the next 10 years, to make our stores accessible to customers," Jegen told reporters after launching Tesco's 10th year anniversary here yesterday.

Tesco now operates 39 stores and two distribution centres.

It is now focusing on expanding its business in the north.

So far this year, Tesco had opened three stores with investments worth some RM240 million. In the next six months, it will open another three.

"The three new stores will be located in Penang, Old Klang Road in Kuala Lumpur, and Sri Iskandar in Perak. Usually, we will invest between RM80 million and RM200 milllion for a store," he said.

Tesco Malaysia is a joint venture between Tesco plc, one of the world's largest international retailers, and Sime Darby Bhd. It started operations in May 2002, with the opening of its first hypermarket in Puchong, Selangor. It currently employs some 15,000 people.

Apart from new stores, Tesco Malaysia will also help upgrade 152 small retail shops under a government plan called Tukar.

Tukar, one of the Entry Point Projects under the Economic Transformation Programme, aims to modernise these shops to increase their competitiveness. To date, three major retail chains, namely Mydin, Carrefour and Tesco have signed up.

Tesco Malaysia has adopted two retail outlets, one in Shah Alam and the other one in Bukit Puchong under the project.

"We have contributed some RM80,000 in terms of shelving and equipment to a shop in Shah Alam and another RM60,000 to the shopowner in Bukit Puchong.

"They have since managed to increase their sales. For instance, the shopowner in Shah Alam managed to double her sales, while the other shop in Puchong managed to increase its workforce," he said.
