Art Deco The Deliciously Detailed To The Sublime Streamline

I have started a thread to show photos of Art Deco buildings and architecture.

Starting out in the 1920s Art deco often features elegant patterns in its detailing. Art Deco was influenced by the primitave arts such as Egyptain or Aztec, also popular was the use of more modern zig zag patterns, symmetrical shapes, recent inventions from transport and communication, and bright dazzling colours.

New York, Los Angeles, Miami and Chicago are probably most thought to be connected with Art Deco, however the style can be found the world over and in some places you first might not have thought such as South Africa, and New Zealand.

A new version of Art Deco started to appear during the 1930s that is now reffered to as Streamline Moderne. This style featured a more streamlined appearance featuring curves and horizontal lines, built in plain white and often had the appearance of an Ocean Liner.

Here are some photos that I have taken of Art Deco buildings around the Midlands in the Uk.

Wolverhampton Art deco, This Former Burtons Store, features Zig Zag Patterns and Elephants In Its design.

Birmingham Art Deco, 7-8 Waterloo Street 1933.

Nottingham Art Deco, Shop.

Dudley Art Deco, Shop.

Dudley A Great Example Of Streamline Moderne, Shop.

Here are two former Art Deco cinemas that have been converted into conference halls. Photos by myself.

The former Odeon Cinema in Leicester now the Athena Conference Hall

The former Savoy Cinema in Northampton, now run by the Jesus Army and known as The Deco Conference Hall

I love art deco, but to me, it's always looked kinda of "Stalanistic."

Love to see my old town in this list! I never quite appreciated just how much art deco there was in Northampton until I really started to get involved in this forum.

It's such a shame that the Jesus Army were able to turn the old Canon Cinema (as it was in its last incarnation) into that excretion - the Jesus centre. I remember the protests when it was announced they wanted to base themselves there.

Art-Deco is fantastic : it describes vibrantly the ecclectism of the 20s and the 30s. The World was still exotic, bourgeoisie was enlightened and technique had not yet prevailed over art. We can only but miss the great Art-Deco towns of the States : this country had developed something irresistible that even Stalinist USSR tried to imitate.

Art Deco!!.....you forget to to say that RIO has many examples of art deco as well, There is guide(not easy to be found) that shows the most expressive example o rio's are deco, only in my street(paissandu street in flamengo neighborhood and laranjeiras neighborhood) you got five great examples: Hotel paysandu, the building in the corner with praia do flamengo street, marajoara house (great example of marajoara art deco, the one that was developed here in brazil)....
other gret example in rio are "central do brasil railway station", buildings in the neighborhoods of castelo(downtown), copacabana, tijuca, flamengo, laranjeiras, catete, and even in some old suburbs like Olaria.
