I cannot believe that this is how Mogadishu looked like in September 1980

Once known as the "Rome of Africa" with all the Colonial-era Italian architecture. It truly was a beautiful city. I've never been there, but my mother lived there as a child, and my father visited there too. Lost for words to see the ruins of what it is today and for nothing that is logical even.

Unfortunately, even if they EVER get their issues (which I don't even know what they are fighting for anymore) finished and rebuild, I don't think that the majority of the buildings in those pics which are currently in ruins are salvageable. The city will have to be totally rebuilt, similarly to what happened to many European cities after WWII.

Crazy video.

I hope that Mogadishu too arises from the rubble one day too. The parallels are astounding.

So sad to see such a lost treasure. The tragedy that happened in that country took away so much.

Muqdisho is the oldest capital city in East Africa, the city is more than a 1000 years old, all the historic heritage is destroyed. I hope that one day the old city's buildings will be renovated just as they did in Beirut after the Lebanese civil war.

Any idea of what happened to the Garesa Museum along with its collection?

This 1000 year old city has and will endure. It will live on to reclaim its rightful title: "The Pearl of the Indian Ocean".

Mogadishu is being reconstructed as we 'type'. This city still has much of its character, uderneath a lot of rubble.

It takes a hell of a lot more than 20 years of war to get rid of the character of this 1000 year old city

Glad to see reconstruction in Muqdisho. Actually there is an opportunity to better plan the city during reconstruction. Tho I insist, all the old sectors should not be demolished and should be restored.

Grazie!!!

Spent many a happy times in Mog, especially at the Anglo American beach club. Used to feel quite safe walking round Mog at night.
