March 2008 international traffic was up nearly 10% at MIA; domestic traffic was flat. At the going rate, 2008 will be the busiest passenger traffic year in MIA's history, surpassing 35M for the first time.

Hello MAH45462, you always have great info on MIA, any news on the African routes or the Dubai-Miami route that Emirates was planning?

Are there any non-stop flights from Miami to South Africa...and what airline? If not, where must you stop if you are going there? I'd rather connect somewhere in Africa than in Washington or Atlanta.

Drats! That was the most incredible airline that I've ever flown! I was hoping to do it again in the fall.
It was hard to figure how they could make money with 48 seats on a 757, but the service and personal attention was phenomenal. What a shame that they couldn't keep it going and have a Miami flight or two.

Two airlines will be upgrading their planes to Miami this summer.

Starting in July, Swiss' Miami-Zürich flights will use Airbus A340-300s, the flagship of the Swiss fleet. The plane will operate the route year-round.

Starting in June, Alitalia's Miami-Rome flight will use Boeing 777-200s, the flagship of the Alitalia fleet. Previously, Alitalia used the 777 to Miami only during the winter months. However, starting in June, they will use it to Miami 365 days a year.

I'm guessing you wouldn't like to connect in new york either hehe... (delta offers ny-joburg) I think you're stuck having to reconnect in the us because miami-israel would be incredibly long :s

Chicago is the only market they are launching this year. Miami and Boston are next, and they already hired people in Miami. One of my friends is working for them out of MIA getting ready to launch up. February 2009 is what they are aiming for.

I think the fact Miami does not have these and other flights is because of Geography. Atlanta and other cities have more flights that originate there because of layovers. We are just more out of the way than say Atlanta or Charlotte.

And I think also Fort Lauderdale takes some of the domestic flights that would otherwise correspond to MIA. MIA concentrates more on Europe, the Northeast, Caribbean, and Latin America.

Definitely. The airports are relatively close to each other and few airlines are going to schedule basically the same domestic flights from both. Plus, because of the metro area's linear sprawl FLL is the most convenient to the greatest number of local residents in the tri-county.

FLL has more flights to the Northeast; MIA has more flights to the western U.S.

MIA has more flights to some medium-sized markets in the southern U.S. that FLL does not - like Savannah, Louisville, and Greensboro.

FLL has more flights to medium-sized markets in the Northeast that MIA does not - like Westchester County, Buffalo, Syracuse, and Allentown.

I know people out in the western and northern suburban areas of Philly that use Allentown on occassion. It's not an option for me since the subway and rail link to PHL is easy from my place but for them it isn't a whole lot further and definitely a cheaper parking option.

It's kind of a "secret" airport that has some real advantages. For someone coming into Philly or NYC and needing a rental car for some reason it's not all that far away from either and the rental rates tend to be MUCH lower.

Some of these "secondary" airports are really finding their niche these days. Interesting stuff...(well, at least to me)

MIA gets 'A' rating for bonds
Fitch Ratings reaffirmed its 'A' rating for Miami International Airport's upcoming $600 million bond offering.

Fitch Ratings re-affirmed its previous rating and outlook for Miami International Airport's bonds, despite recent cost overruns on North Terminal projects.

Fitch assigned an 'A' rating -- its sixth highest -- to Miami-Dade County's upcoming $600 million bond offering, with a 'Stable' outlook. The agency also reaffirmed that rating on the county's $3.2 billion in outstanding aviation revenue bonds, used to fund the airport's $6.2 billion construction program.

The agency said it based its rating on the "airport's role as the nation's leading international gateway to the Caribbean and Latin America; significant cargo operations that offset costs normally borne by passenger carriers alone; strong demand for air service from the local market; a diverse mix of domestic and international passenger and cargo airlines; and enhanced management oversight of the capital improvement program.''
