Reminds me of the famous 'Lunch atop a Skyscraper' photo, taken during the construction of the G.E. Building in New York.

I think that's the look they were going for Aek. Baffles me how there's no harnes or anything, we take health and safety for granted these days but looking back it was so dangerous!

One of the best photos of Manchester/the UK I have ever seen. Thanks for posting

I wish we kept those chimneys though, imagine the skyline with them + all the new stuff we have now.

That pic of the CIS chaps is incredible! Where did this come from? Beautiful shot. (Would there really be a girder that big at the top of a modest [on a World scale] UK building?)

Still ... a great picture, even if it is a fake!

I'm aware it was probably staged to replicate the Chrysler Building photo that Aek mentionned, but I'm afraid I don't know whether or not it's fake or not. It's certainly in the right position if that's Victoria station in the background.

It's from Flickr

It was the G.E. Building at the Rockefeller Centre not the Chrysler

And I only about this picture because when you go to the building's observation deck called the 'Top of the Rock', you can recreate the photo by sitting on a girder with Midtown Manhattan behind and below you (it's fake though as it's just a green screen). But still it's really cool!

Oh, not sure where I got Chrysler from. I've been to the Top of the Rock, it's excellent

I agree, I prefer it to the Empire State Building's observation deck personally. Because in the Empire State Building, there's metal bars blocking your view, whereas at the Top of the Rock there's just glass panels, so you get a much better view in my opinion (that's if it's not changed since 2007).

Sorry if I've just changed the topic of the conversation by the way!

When we went in 2008 we were right on top of the roof!! Bit windy, but great views of course!

Both those Mcr and Glasgow pics are brilliant!! I guess the CIS one would have been late 50s and the Glasgow one late 60s? Wish we had a Brum equivalent.

You can see the Boddingtons Brewery chimney on the right, which was sadly demolished last year. I always liked the corbelled and hexagonal ornate entablature on the cap, which gave it an instantly recognisable silhouette.
