Its resemblance to Lower East Side or Greenwich Village is just uncanny. No wonder people now call Shanghai "New York of the East"

I really liked those small brick buildings and houses. It's good to see this side of Shanghai compared to all the commies and skyscrapers of glass and concrete we see all the time. Shanghai has some great looking neighbs. The 40th pic has quite a resemblance to home, particularly downtown ny.

Are you talking about the pic that i quoted? Because yeah I totally agree with you. When I saw that, I was like "Whoa sure that's not downtown manhattan?" You're totally right about the uniqueness though. These NYesque buildings are something that other Chinese cities can't say they have. Tall glass modern skyscrapers, condominiums, and commieblocks are stuff that every Chinese city can claim they have. On the other hand, the older 1930's style buildings are unique things that no other Chinese city has in such abundance as Shanghai. Maybe Wuhan or Tianjin might have a strip of art deco, but nothing on this scale. I've always thought Shanghai strongly resembles downtown NY.
