Kachi Canal

President’s (Mushy's) Address at Sibi Mela

700,000 people will be benefited by the Kachi Canal project and it will supply water to 713,000 acres. I promise that in 2008, this Kachi Canal will start flowing.Right now the work is being carried on it from both ends, Balochistan side and Punjab side. As regards the establishment of an Agriculture university, it should be established here because when Kachi Canal will start flowing, Agriculture and farming will prosper and research will be needed for it.

Let us come to the water system. Water is the basic thing for agriculture and live stocks. Meerani dam has been completed and 36000 acres land is being irrigated. Fish farming can be done there. Subukzai Dam has also been completed and will be inaugurated in next month. Three other water reservoirs i-e Bolan Dam, Molan Dam and Qali Dandi Dam will also be constructed. Brick lining of canals is being done throughout the Pakistan. All water reservoirs are being brick lined in Balochistan too. 5 Billion rupees will be spent on it. We have plan to establish water filtration plants every where. Every village with more than 1000 population will be provided with water filtration plant. It will reduce diseases.

Kachi canal

First Pak Agri-Business Conference Address by General Pervez Musharraf Chief Executive Islamic Republic of Pakistan

Kachi canal will give us 500 thousand acres of land. I will just as a rough
guide say that about 505 lac acres of land just one canal, this Kachi canal, will give and translate it into cotton and we have very good cotton in that area. This will give us about four to five hundred million dollars, just this one canal. And if you make this canal, the first crop of cotton will give us this return.

He said Kachi Canal, which is under construction, would increase agriculture production by improving irrigation facilities in Dera Bugti, Balon, Jhal Magsi, Sibi and Naseerabad. The prime minister was informed that a total of 700,000 acres would be irrigated by Kachi Canal, including 102,000 acres in Dera Bugti.

He said Mirani Dam would be completed by the end of this year and Sabakzai Dam by June 2007, while phase one of Kachi Canal phase would be completed in 2008.

Greater Thal Canal phase I to be completed by 2009

Durrani Says it would irrigate 551,500 acres land. The Phase-I of the Kachi Canal and Greater Thal Canal would be completed by the end of 2008, while Phase-I of Raine Canal is likely to be completed by March 2009, said WAPDA Chairman Shakil Durrani, while presiding over a meeting to review the progress on water and hydropower projects here at the WAPDA House on Friday.

On completion of the phase-I, these projects would help irrigate about 551,500 acres of virgin land in the underdeveloped areas of Balochistan, Punjab and the Sindh provinces, he said.

The meeting was attended by Member Water Muhammad Mushtaq Chaudhry, general managers of the water wing, project directors and consultants.

Speaking on the occasion, WAPDA Chairman Shakil Durrani said in the wake of the bifurcation of WAPDA, the authority can devote full time to the development of water and hydropower projects.

The authority is now totally focussing on harnessing the water resources, which, in turn, has increased its responsibilities vis-ŕ-vis constructing the water reservoirs and hydropower projects, he added.

Commenting on the pace of work on the projects during the last five months, particularly the raising of Mangla Dam and Neelum-Jhelum project, he directed the authorities concerned to further accelerate the pace of work for the timely completion of these projects.

Reviewing the security measures taken at various WAPDA projects, he said foolproof security must be ensured on all the projects, particularly where Chinese and other foreign companies were working, including the Neelum-Jhelum Hydroelectric Project and Gomal Zam Dam project.

The development work on new Mirpur city and three other townships are expedited so that the plots to the affected people of the Mangla Dam raising project could be handed over in due course of time, he said.

He said the projects of Munda Dam and Mitaltan Hydropower Project would now be executed by WAPDA instead of the private sector and all efforts would be made for the timely completion of these important projects.

During the detailed deliberations the meeting informed that three high-head hydropower projects, commonly known as Khwar Projects in Kohistan area of NWFP with an accumulative generation capacity of 323 megawatts would start contributing to the national grid by early 2009.

The meeting was also apprised that the canal system of Mirani Dam has been handed over to the Government of Balochistan couple of weeks ago and the survey pertaining to land acquisition for Kurram-Tangi Dam is expected to be completed within three months.

It starts off very close to Baluchistan/Punjab border and irrigates on both sides, most of the area it covers is in Baluchistan.

I think the Mangla dam should be a part of this thread as well.

"Official sources said that with the completion of the project, the dam would have the storage capacity of an additional 2.88 million acre feet of water and more than 25,000 acre of land will be irrigated."

"since the project will augment supply of irrigation water in various parts of the country particularly in Punjab and Sindh provinces at a time when country is in dire need"

"Water from the dam could also be utilised for drinking purposes in Mirpur and the adjoining hamlets on the periphery of the Mangla lake through execution of the greater water supply schemes in Mirpur and the adjoining areas."

The Kachhi Canal is another important project that will ensure that Balochistan gets its share of water from the Indus. The canal, when completed, will bring more than 800,000 acres under cultivation in the Kachhi and Nasirabad region. This mega project would cost around Rs54 billion.
