ISTANBUL LOOKS FORWARD TO THE CHAMPIONSHIPS

(11.07.2007) The Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Championships, that will be held in İstanbul in 2011-2013, will bring a new dimension to Turkish tennis to build upon.

A meeting took place among WTA Tour Directors, Turkish Youth and Sports Managers and İstanbul Cup directors about the decision to host the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Championships in İstanbul in 2011-2013. WTA Tour CEO Larry Scott told about the significance holding the event which will offer a record 4.5 million dollar in prize money in İstanbul and what it will bring to to the city.

"Istanbul is one of the world's great capitals, and will be a fantastic home for the Sony Ericsson Championships from 2011-2013," said Larry Scott, CEO of the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour. "We are thrilled that our sport's tremendous growth over the past years, coupled with the excitement surrounding our Roadmap plan, has built an unprecedented equity in our Sony Ericsson Championships. Women's tennis is growing in popularity at an incredible pace in Turkey thanks in large part to the success of the Istanbul Cup, and we believe that bringing our season-ending finale and the world's very best players to Turkey will significantly increase the stature of our sport in this key market and region."

"Turkey is very proud to host the Sony Ericsson Championships from 2011-2013," said Mehmet Atalay, General Director for Youth and Sport in Turkey. "Turkey is the home of a number of world-class sporting events, and tennis is one of the fastest growing sports. We are looking forward to showcasing the very best of women's sport both nationally and to the world."

"Istanbul is an incredible city that has really embraced women's professional tennis," said Venus Williams, five-time Grand Slam champion and winner of the inaugural 2005 Istanbul Cup. "I am really looking forward to our most prestigious event going to Istanbul and hope to be competing there when it does."

"Istanbul is a miracle city sitting between two continents, and will be a truly special setting for the Sony Ericsson Championships," said Coskun Erginer, Managing Director of the Istanbul Cup. "We intend to make the experience for both the fans and players truly special."
The 2011-2013 Sony Ericsson Championships in Istanbul, Turkey will take place in a brand new world class, 10,000 seat facility to be constructed.

The city of Istanbul has and continues to host a number of premier international sporting events, including the Formula One Turkish Grand Prix, the MotoGP Grand Prix of Turkey, the FIA World Touring Car Championship, the GP2 and the Le Mans Series 1000 km races at the Istanbul Park GP Racing Circuit. The Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul was the home of the 2005 UEFA Champions League Final, and the Þükrü Saracoðlu Stadium will host the 2009 UEFA Cup Final. Since 2005, Istanbul has also hosted the successful Istanbul Cup, which has featured players such as Venus Williams and Maria Sharapova.

The Sony Ericsson Championships, which features the top 8 singles players and top 4 doubles teams, has become one of the most coveted sporting events in the world, which as part of the Tour's strategy has been showcased in different key markets around the globe in world class venues. Over the course of the past years, with the addition of Sony Ericsson as title sponsor and an incredibly successful inaugural year in Madrid, the event has reached new levels of popularity, prestige and global exposure.

In its storied history dating back to 1972, the Sony Ericsson Championships has been held in the internationally renowned cities of New York, Munich, Los Angeles and Madrid.

Istanbul State Opera and Ballet performs two-act children’s musical Heidi on Saturday at 11:00. The premier of Bellini’s two-act opera I Capulatie I montecchi is at AKM Grand Hall on Saturday at 15:30.

Istanbul State Opera and Ballet also performs at Süreyya Opera House, Kadıköy. Three Ballets will be performed on Saturday at 20:00.

AKM Grand Hall hosts Istanbul State Symphony Orchestra conducted by Antonio Pirolli on Friday at 19:30 and on Saturday at 11:00. Soloist: Gottlieb Wallish (piano) Program: Mozart and Haydn.

Composer/virtuoso Paola Pandolfo (viola de gamba) performs at Akbank Sanat, Beyoglu on Friday at 20:00.

Nardis Jazz Club, Galata hosts Onder Focan on Friday. Vocalist Feyza Eren performs on Saturday night.

Danish vocalist Malene Mortensen and Group perform at Istanbul Jazz Center, Ortaköy on Friday and Saturday.

Pop& Rock
Daniel Melingo will be at the stage at Babylon, Tünel on Friday. Milkshake Party with Mummy and Blackcat, the best R&B and Hip Hop DJs, is on Saturday night.

Göksel (guitar) performsm at Acoustic Episodes Concert Series at Ghetto, Galatasaray on Friday. Buzuki Orhan and Istanbul Rembetikocuları will be at the stage on Saturday night.

Group Dolapdere Big Gang, performing famous pop and rock songs with classical Turkish music instruments, performs at Bostancı Gösteri Merkezi on Saturday.

INTERNATIONAL ISTANBUL FILM FESTIVAL



27th International Istanbul Film Festival, organized by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (Istanbul Kültür Sanat Vakfı - IKSV) and sponsored by Akbank will be held between April 5 and 20, 2008.

This year the festival hosts 200 films in more than 20 categories including the latest, the most popular films of 2007 and 2008 as well as unforgettable classical films and the masterpieces of famous directors. Workshops, masterclasses, panel discussions, exhibitions, parties and concerts are among the facilities of the 27th International Istanbul Film Festival.

The tickets of the festival will be on sale on Saturday, March 22, 2008 and can be purchased at Beyoğlu Emek, Beyoğlu Atlas and Kadikoy Rexx movie theaters and through Biletix.

Ticket prices: 10 YTL (regular), 7 YTL (students and 65+), 3.5 YTL (daytime performances on weekdays). 20% discount is applied to the movie lovers holding Akbank Axess card except daytime performances on weekdays.

Akbank Sanat is the center of the 27th International Istanbul Film Festival. The multi-purpose hall of Akbank Sanat hosts workshops and chats with the guests of the festival.

The traditional Midnight Screenings continue this year at Beyoğlu Fitaş Movie Theater on Fridays and at Beyoğlu Atlas movie theater on Saturdays at midnight.

Akbank Galas are composed of the first screenings of the most attractive films shown at Beyoğlu Emek Movie Theater, every weekday at 21:30.

The five films, put over at international children film festivals, will be screened on weekends at 13:30 performances. Birthday Party of Disney Channel will take place at CRR Concert Hall, Harbiye on April 19th between 12:00 and 17:30.

The films will compete for Golden Tulip award at National and International Competitions of the 27th International Istanbul Film Festival. Radikal Public Award, FACE – Council of Europe Film Award and Nokia Short Film Award are at the program of this year’s festival.

he Gala of the film “I’m Not There” which is a journey to Bob Dylan’s life is at Emek movie thetetar on Saturday April 5th at 21.30. Famous Turkish pop and rock music stars Sertab Erener, Teoman, Demir Demirkan and Emre Aydın perform Bob Dylan songs at Ghetto, Galatasaray at the same date.

Evet gerçekten iyi gruplar geliyor.

RHCP kesin gelecek senelerde gelecektir. Rock'n'Coke falan bu sene RHCP'yi getirir diye umuyordum ama festival iptal oldu. Söylentilere göre programlar uymadı falan bahane olup, bu sene başka organizasyonlardan daha iyilerini getiremeyeceklerini anlayınca haklı olarak yedirememişler.

Bu arada Linkin' Park geliyor mu, gelmiyor mu? Yalan oldu gibi.
