Greater Manchester's councils to receive £30m windfall from airport profits

Manchester Evening News: http://www.manchestereveningnews.co....e-30m-12278245

The councils of Greater Manchester receive a share of the airport's profits - so when the airport does well, so too does Greater Manchester.

Passenger numbers at Manchester Airport have now reached a record high of 25m. The airport is expected to hit 50m passengers by the 2030s.

Quote:
Greater Manchester’s 10 town halls will receive a windfall of more than £30m from Manchester Airport’s profits.

Manchester Airports Group (MAG), which is part-owned by the 10 authorities, has this morning announced its financial figures for the six months to September 30.

Revenues rose by more than eight per cent compared to the same six-month period in 2015 - from £445m to £482m, while underlying pre-tax profits were up 6.6pc, from £202m to £216m.

It’s triggered a total £46.9m cash injection to MAG’s shareholders. Of that, Manchester council will get £16.6m while each of the other nine councils will take £1.5m.

The plans for Central Sky Park include a redeveloped Metro Link station. Hasn't the Deansgate Castlefield Metro stop already been redeveloped?

Hardman Square in the heart of Spinningfields is getting an overhaul.

There'll be new meadows, trees and bushes - and a four-storey pavillion containing numerous restaurants and bars where you'll be able to buy a pint for the measly price of £8

Hundreds of construction workers now employed on this site.

The site has its very own concrete factory:

Now that the crane has been erected at Tower 4 (44 floors, 140m), the core is starting to rise. In a few weeks we anticipate it'll be at ground level:

Where the workers are standing on the left will be part of the underground car park. On top of where they are standing there will be a new riverside plaza:

Meanwhile, at Tower 1 (64 floors, 200.5m), the concrete base is starting to go in. The crane will be erected here in a few weeks, and will reach 225m to become the UK's tallest free-standing crane.

OMI have a new website.

Quote:

Exchange Court is the next phase of OMI’s re-generation of the Greengate area of Salford, close to Manchester City Centre. The scheme provides 350 apartments for the PRS market along with 3 levels of a basement providing 88 parking spaces.

Resident’s facilities (Foyer/ Gym and Lounge) are positioned at the lower levels providing animation to the street frontage and a new attractive public realm walkway within the site will connect the historic street of Greengate with the River Irwell. High-level communal roof terraces will provide outdoor space for residents with exceptional views out over Manchester City Centre.

The scheme consists of a single 44-storey point block located at the bridgehead position, marking the entry into Salford as you cross the River Irwell from Manchester City Centre. The building is clad in seamless glazed curtain walling with gold coloured reflective metal cladding panels set behind and is intended to ‘shimmer’ as the sun moves around it.

A lower brick faced element provides continuity, addressing the street and knitting itself into the existing pattern of buildings along Greengate itself. The project is on site and is due to be complete in late 2018.

TBH I don't think we'll ever sort PG's out. But............

In comparison we rave about Barcelona and it's square's. Fair enough.

But Plaça Catalunya isn't all that. And it's pretty grim in real life. Of course, Barcelona is brilliant.

But yes, there are no retail units to ruin the square, unlike Piccadilly Gardens.

Oh! And I don't think those retail units will be the final design. They look so out of place.

Water Street.

Taken Yesterday.

The brick cladding is now going in on one side of the tower next to the bathroom showroom. Believe it or not, I forgot to take a picture of it. If I remember correctly, but I could be wrong, the brick is a grey putty colour.(3rd picture confirms this) It was getting dark. Either way, I thought it looked a nice colour.

The cladding system is the same system that was used on Cambridge Street, where the bricks are slid into place along the metal strips, so the cladding/look of Water Street should be similar to Cambridge Street, bar a different brick colour.

OK.

Firstly and most importantly, I would like to say a massive thanks to Renaker for taking me on a guided tour of Water Street on Friday Afternoon.

I would also like to say thanks for allowing me to take picture's of the city centre skyline and surrounding area from the top of tower. The picture's are below.

The picture's were taken with my camera phone. 1 or 2 of the picture's have come out slightly blurred.(arrrgh!)

For picture's of the tower currently under construction, please click here. http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showth...#post137088800

I've photomerged the last picture. In doing so it has lost a little bit of sharpness.

As you can see from the picture's, the views across the city centre, Middlewood Locks, Pomona, over to Salford Quays, and Mediacity were amazing.
