MOSI lands £3m from government

http://www.manchestereveningnews.co....ment---8253391

Quote:
The Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne has confirmed that Manchester's Museum of Science and Industry will receive £3m towards the development of a temporary exhibition gallery.

Speaking at MOSI yesterday at the launch of the European City of Science 2016, Osborne said the development would result in "world-class facilities to host a programme of visiting exhibitions".

MOSI was granted an £800,000 initial investment from the Treasury in March this year to begin the design and planning phases of the expansion.
The new gallery is to be housed in the basement of the 1830 railway warehouse. The internal vaulted space will be opened up to create a double-height 5,000 sq ft room.

OK now I think somebody on the Manchester council has a photograph of George Osborne in a compromising position.

I mean at this point it must be political. He's throwing everything at the north. Do they honestly think they can gain votes here? Or is George Osborne trying to position himself as a future leader of the party, after Cameron is inevitably ousted after next year's election.

I just don't see the political gain, here. But he's a politician, he doesn't get out bed in the morning if he doesn't think it will help his campaign.

Maybe he's trying to pull the rug from beneath Miliband's feet. Beat him to the punch on key support for the north, just to weaken Labour's position. Especially after abandoning the unions and having an empty telephone as a leader.

I doubt the Tories are trying to win Manchester - it would be naive of them to think they can do that. Manchester is Labour through and through, apart from a few areas.

It does seem as though there might be a big fat catch attached to all of this, but as yet I can't see one.

Also note that Osborne isn't throwing everything "at the North" - he's giving a lot to Manchester but taking a lot away from the North as a whole. You only have to look at the UK City Talk forums to see that.

Manchester Airport | Updates

___________________________________________________________

With over 20m annual passengers, Manchester's Airport is the third largest in the UK, and is triple the size of the next largest non-London UK airport. It features three terminals and two runways, and a rail station with links to Central Manchester and the rest of the North of England.

The Airport is currently undergoing a boom, with annual passenger increases of 7%. At this rate, it'll easily be handling 50m passengers by 2029.

This is just a little update of all the things currently ongoing at the Airport - including plans to completely rebuild it and expand capacity.

New Routes

World_rep on the Manchester forums has done an excellent summary list:

New routes to Enfidha, Fuerteventura and Antalya.

Easyjet:
9th based aircraft joins the fleet.
New routes to Porto, Marseille and Pisa. Hotly tipped Santiago, Paris CDG and Split.

Ryanair:
8th based aircraft joins.
New route to Chadian, increases to Madrid, Lisbon, Faro, Malaga and more.

Cathay Pacific:
Continuation of new 4 weekly Hong Kong on B77W. Increase to daily from Oct 2nd.

Saudi Airlines:
Increases Jeddah to 4 weekly from Dec 2nd

Turkish Airlines:
Add 3rd daily flight to Istanbul from June 23rd. A330 used in December/January.

Brussels Airlines:
All 3 daily flights now use larger A320/A320.

Hainan Airlines:
Hotly tipped to run 5 weekly Beijing from May.

Icelandair:
Increase to 4 weekly from Sept 6th.

Flybe:
Increase Isle of Mann and Exeter. Codeshare with Cathay Pacific.

Delta:
Add daily New York JFK from June 29th

Air Canada:
Make Manchester year round

Virgin Atlantic:
Add daily Atlanta from March 29th

American Airlines:
Use B767 on both New York JFK and Chicago flights

Thomas Cook:
Add 3 weekly New York JFK and 2 weekly Miami. Increases to other routes.

PIA:
Increase Islamabad to 5 weekly

Qatar Airways:
Re-add 4 weekly flights to make MAN 14 weekly

Etihad:
Use more B77W on the morning flights as well as evening flight

Not bad going so far......

There are also two new routes announced today:

Manchester have also recently become the first airport outside of London to secure a direct link to China (Cathay Pacific to Hong Kong). Now, bosses are confident they can start securing more and more routes to mainland China.
With all the long-haul routes coming online in 2015, and the fact that largely-domestic carrier FlyBe has their hub at Manchester, we could see Manchester becoming somewhat of a UK hub in years to come: particularly with all the capacity restraints currently ongoing at Heathrow in London.

Airport City

Airport City Manchester is a proposed £800 million expansion of Manchester Airport. The plan is to create on-site logistics, manufacturing, office and leisure facilities. Manchester Airport will become the first airport in the United Kingdom to build an airport city.

Basically a large office park next to the Airport.

Fully funded by the Chinese, and already under construction. A few large units have already been taken up.

As well as Airport City, the World Freight Center nearby is undergoing a massive expansion with huge new industrial sheds being constructed.

Expansion of the Ground Transit Terminal

Manchester's Metrolink Light Rail network was recently expanded to the Airport - opening last month.

As well as the Metrolink, Network Rail are also adding an additional platform to the station to improve capacity.

In addition, there is a long-term plan to bring High Speed Rail to Manchester Airport, which will see the construction of an HSR station on-site. This will give access to Birmingham and London, as well as points north - and Central Manchester will be accessed in under 10 minutes via a new 8-mile long rail tunnel under the city.

Plans to rebuild the Airport

Recently there have been rumours about plans to completely demolish terminals at the Airport and rebuild them. Some of the terminals at Manchester are approaching 50 years old now and appear outdated.

Coyote, quoted below, is a reliable source on the Manchester forums who attended an event where the plans for the Airport were released.

It's to be a phased scheme all being done by 2022.

In essence, T2 will double in size and become a 'mega terminal'. The 'pier' aspect of T2 is extended westwards towards the Staff West/T2 long stay car park access road and makes a 90 degree turn to form a 'finger'. Two more 'fingers' are added to T2 going out towards the cargo centre. Staff West/T2 long stay become contact stands for the furthest 'finger'. T2 is extended eastwards around the apron to connect with T1.

T1 is entirely demolished, except for the gates. Where the terminal used to be becomes 'Europes largest multi-story car park'. Pier C (thanks Marni!) is also completely demolished. Which allows for duel taxi-ways.

T3 remains as a focus for the low cost operators. The T3 mini-pier which extends out towards the runways (where the BMI A330 would usually park up) is also demoished. I think, again from the plans, this is done to allow again for duel taxi-ways.

Pretty much all the grass bits on the current apron are gone to make way for extra stands. Taxi ways around the T2 fingers will be wide enough to allow two narrowbodies to taxi past each other but only one widebody.

The plans are really impressive and, I was sat there thinking, the first time iv'e seen the airport take an almost Changi like vision of the future, ie..planning so far in advance!

There have been no renders released yet, however we're now at the stage where it does look as though a full-scale rebuild of the airport is looking likely.

Uomo on the Manchester forums illustrated what Coyote was explaining:

Any chance of a proposed site plan for Airport City? I'm trying to understand where, exactly, it will actually be situated. And how big it might be.

Of course, it's pie in the sky at the moment. But I know what a pie looks like. This is totally alien.

There's a few different renders and indicative layouts.... The main Airport City area is directly North of the terminal complex
