I shop, work and have a lot of family living in manchester, but I live in the Peak District (does being able to see manchester from my high vantage point in the hills count? Hohoho), I usually only say I'm from manchester in conversation when I've ascertained that the person I'm talking to isn't very geographically inclined (they are f*cking stupid), other than that I often say Derbyshire, it gets a lot of confused looks for some reason, and I sometimes receive a response like "are you a hobbit?"

There is a part of Macclesfield called tytherington which has a large very middle class estate. Pretty much everyone who lives there drives a range rover and tries to act like they are living in the nice part of Cheshire when really, they live in hell on earth I find it hilarious

Pics by jrb.

Nearing completion. This is quite a brutalist-looking building, but I love the way it wraps around Monroes pub, giving an exciting juxtaposition which epitomises Manchester's style of architecture.

Oxford Road Station Plaza Redevelopment
Masterplan | City

Floors: Varies | Developer: Network Rail collaboration | Architect: Fletcher Priest

Current Status: Vision

Thread: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showth...1743076&page=4

Outline vision for a redevelopment of the Oxford Road station plaza has also produced a number of new building proposals:

Quote:
The scheme proposed:-

55 Whitworth Street West : Apartment building (66 units)
65 Whitworth Street West : Hotel (133 rooms)

70 Oxford Road : Office 16,116 sq m (173,471 sq ft)
James Leigh Office Building : Office 14,883 sq m (160,199 sq ft)

4 new blocks, all about 15 stories in height, including a revitalised plaza and improved sight lines making use of the Palace Hotel.

From outside Oxford Road station, you'll be able to see the spire of the Palace Hotel straight ahead, which should provide an impressive welcome. Click here to see the Palace Hotel.

Looking back at the station, which will be redeveloped as part of Network Rail's plans:

They'll be a collection of LCD screens on the corner of Oxford St and Whitworth:

Finally, the scheme from above:

This junction is one of the busiest in the city, and this scheme is actually proving quite contreversial on the Manchester forums because it involves the demolition of this building, The Cornerhouse, on the right in the below picture. The Cornerhouse is a boutique arts cinema picturehouse and indie cafe, which is moving out of this building and into a new one on 1st St:

Whatever happens, we'll keep you updated

1st St (North)
Masterplan | City

Floors: Varies | Developer: Ask

Current Status: Under Construction, nearing completion

Thread: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showth...#post120940963

First St is a new city district revolving around a new boutique arts cinema and theatre. It involves new apartments, student accommodation, an Innside hotel and new shops, bars and restaurants - centred around a new square.

Jrb went to take a few photos today.

The new square, Tony Wilson Place:

This unit will house a couple of shops, restaurants and bars:

These railway arches will be opened up as a gateway to the scheme, and some will be used for shops and restaurants too:

Core still rising. Still has over double the way to go yet:

This building will be as tall as the tower on the right of this photo:

Manchester is looking so cool. You can tell that the a lot of thought has been put into a lot of these projects. I can't wait to visit.

Also, @VDB : I agree. Motel One looks beautiful on that corner. Great little project.

Some of the city's streets are in dire need of a cleanup. And I mean the actual street, not the buildings on them. The road surfaces are abysmal in places, and there's a ton of clutter too; confusing road markings, unnecessary signs, ridiculous traffic light configurations.

And a lot of it is compounded by the tramways running alongside.

Also, there are areas that feel so totally empty it's like you're on an industrial estate. I know Old Trafford is never going to be an inner city stadium, but its surroundings are so sparse and dead, it's like the stands are in some post apocalyptic version of the city. Especially compared to the Etihad, which is just as remote but feels like it has an actual district around it.

Salford as a whole has a lot of dead zones. Really wide streets fronted with brownfields and construction sites.
