Trafford Park Metrolink Line
Metro Line | Trafford

Stations: 6 | Length: 4 miles | Cost: £350m

Current Status: Planning, fully funded

Thread: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=866944

Trafford Council have contributed their money towards building the new Metrolink Line through Trafford Park:

Trams to the Trafford Centre a step nearer as £300m building fund is signed off

16:59, 28 April 2015
By Jennifer Williams

Work planned to begin next year with Metrolink track up and running by winter 2019

Catching a tram to the Trafford Centre is a step closer to reality after town hall bosses signed off the £300m needed for a new line.

The Metrolink extension - made possible in part by the Greater Manchester’s ’s devolution deal - is scheduled to be open by 2019.

It shows six new stops, planned near to key destinations - Wharfside for Old Trafford, the Imperial War Museum North, Trafford Park Village, Parkway, EventCity and the intu Trafford Centre.

Council leaders from the region’s 10 authorities have now officially signed off the cash needed for its construction, which they hope will start next year.

Most of that cash is coming via the Greater Manchester devolution deal, agreed with George Osborne last year, although Trafford council is also putting up £20m in capital funding.

In total, the entire project will cost £350m, £37m of which had already been signed off by the council leaders to allow 10 trams to be bought.

But this latest move marks a milestone in the overall scheme.

The next stage will see detailed designs drawn up - and an official government hearing in July to request the final sign-off from transport ministers.

Trafford council leader Sean Anstee said: “This is a really welcome milestone to secure the deliver of Metrolink to Trafford Park, which is a key strategic transport priority for Trafford and the wider Greater Manchester community.”

A public consultation on the 5.5km line, which closed last November, showed 89pc backing for the scheme.

It forms part of the super-council’s emerging vision for Greater Manchester over the next three decades.

Trafford Park provides more employment than anywhere outside the city centre - with at least 1,500 business and more than 30,000 jobs.

It is hoped workers in other parts of the conurbation, including those such as Rochdale and Oldham that have recently been added to the Metrolink network, will be able to access those jobs thanks to the new link - boosting the region’s economy as a whole and helping employment.

Its success in doing so will help determine future waves of cash from the government for other projects, under the terms of last year’s devolution deal.

What's going on in front of the council building, first street area? The car park seem empty and there is a load of boarded up areas and rubble. I got a load of pics just in case something was happening.

Lots of earth being moved:

The left hand side view through the gate, you might just be able to make out a couple of people in hi-vis jackets examining/removing some old red-brick foundations. Not sure if this is the university heritage team (whether there was anything of note, or architectural interest here in previous years I don't know), or just builders?:

The somewhat impeded view back to the city:

Those Angelgate buildings look a lot like Crowne Plaza in that city down the M6.
That Kampus block looks a bit 60's also. Is it a refurb, or are they all new builds?

Angelgate isn't the best of Manchester newbuilds, admittedly.

The Kampus site as it appears currently:

That tower Is staying, and then there's I think 3 newbuilds which are of a similar size.

Yeah, these are buildings all of our cities should be trying to get rid of.

Kampus looks nice though.
