VIENNA | Flugfeld Aspern quarter Development News

In 2007 the city council of Vienna approved the master plan for the largest development area in the recent history of the city. It takes place on the area of the former Airport Aspern which might be known only to geeks of the history of aviation as it had been the airport of Vienna at a time when the Austrian empire still existed. This area is already for a long time no airport anymore but owned to 100% by the city, which creates the chance for large scale development.

The Masterplan for this area is projecting a new mixed use center with appartments for 20.000 people, office buildings, mixed use buildings, and in the east extensive areas for industries (that means work for 20.000 people in industry and commerce). Also a new university campus is planned even if they have yet to find a university that plans to move there.

The emphasizes clearly lies on public means of transport (railway, subway, tramway, bus), biking and pedestrian venues. A high priority access from a new Autobahn is included however as well. The Flugfeld Aspern will be only 28 railway minutes away from Bratislava main station and 22 minutes from Vienna city center, according to official sources.

The horizon of realisation is the next 20 years. It will conclude 4 phases of construction. (0 to 3) Phase 0 is going to start construction most likely already at the end of this year or at the beginning of the next one and includes the industrial areas in the south east of the Flugfeld. Phase 1 is projected for 2009-2012, whereas the first residential are said to be not finished before 2011. Phase 2 (2013-2019) will conclude more residentials, industries, the university campus, office buildings and the northern railway station area that is going to become the major PT-hub for north east Vienna. Phase 3 (beyond 2020) will include major office projects and the pedestrian shopping street which will become the urban center of the new district.

The building of the central sea will start already at the end of this year and include major earth movements to the northern border of the area to create a soft rise in height towards the new autobahn. Also the park in the neighborhood of phase 1 will be created that early.

In the upper center one can see small structured green patches. Grass has been planted there to give an idea of the first few blocks that will be constructed there starting in 2009 (see phase 1)
