I must say that Dubai is so overrated and that reminds me of the film Metropolis, especialy with all those towers clustered in one small piece of land, plus all the islands that will disappear when the sea levels rise... It's a very lousy amusement park, but this one is even uglier because they're all grey...
What's the interest in building a city that looks like many others around the world?? What will they do when there is no more oil?

The future economics is one thing - we can only speculate about it.

For me the immediate issue is that most buildings in Dubai look rather cheap design-wise. The design/architecture is as if some high school, second rate architects churned them out in one afternoon. Many similar looking, relatively ugly buildings are being constructed. Also, as so much is constructed at the same time, the style is somewhat uniform. Nothing organic about this urban growth. I am concerned with the aspect that this design will soon age and the whole city will look dated in 10-15 years time.

Having said that, it is impressive to see the place grow so powerfully. This fact is enviable. I only have an issue with the design.

lino-regarding sea level rise, recent facts indicate, even if thousands of huge ice shelves melt, it will be lucky to increase the worlds sea levels by 1cm.
who really cares if Dubai have clusters of supertalls? arent we all here because were skyscraper fanatics? i somtimes dontr understand some members of this forum.

Its an opinion that we have to respect. Dubai is a fairly new rising city and every thing new is always not acceptable by everyone!
But look at the bright side( if you like that) a new record of height, new ideas of building designs and man made islands, which if it wasnt built in Dubai it could happen anywhere else......and the same talk we will have again

I look at photos of other cities... I like to see what is different and what makes a city's own identity. I like skyscrapers, of course, it's something that amazes me, how it's done, how it stands, the views from up there... but I just think that this place is becoming overrated... if I see clusters of skyscrapers on their own, without their names, I could mix them altogether ... it's my opinion... cities need their own identity.
About sea levels, well there are different theories, others say that levels will rise a lot...
Plus, about Dubai's development cause, the oil, what will Dubai do when oil runs down? I hope they start to think about it from now on, for their good.
I don't say bad all the time about Dubai, I just think their development should be sustented. What is the social development rate, what social facilities do they offer, what about culture, health, etc.?

What social development are we talking about here ?

What about the citys/countrys' culture ? what do you want to know ? i dont get this part of the question

Health , as in the level of services provided ?

If i understood correctly i would say the second part of your reply is impotant and needs to be stated more clearly .... what exactly do you want to know so I or anyone with the knowledge can reply accordingly ..... or you could always google !!!

I'm sorry to bust anyone's bubble, but people who seams concerned about certain factors or issues on cities/places they don't like, in general, don't give a sh*t about them.

It's just a gimmick, even if just a subconscious one.
