I dont think our trains are beautiful but they are modern airy and clean.

Connex are only operating the system for the State govt as they own nothing IE: rolling stock ,tracks or stations thats why they wont spend their money on upgrades. The new trains coming from France are being paid for by the taxpayer.

BTW the tender to run the Train and Tram systems comes up soon so it will be interesting if Connex and Yarra Trams are successful.

Connex had nothing to do with the purchase of those trains, the trains were there before they came on the scene. As far as I know Connex don't purchase any trains, the state government does.

I don't know why people suggest Sydney has the best looking trains. These are alot more common on the network then the new Millenniums.

C-Sets (third picture - also no way near as common as first 2), Tangara's and Millennium trains are all nice looking whilst the other silver trains and the new Oscars are respectively quite ugly and weird/boxy looking. The new PPP train should prove to be a nice modern looking train aswell.

V-Sets, Millenniums and Interurban Tangara's are all very nice smooth (not so much the Tangara there) and comfy rides with the first 2 being so smooth it's easy to drift of to sleep in. I really hope that they create some kind of second generation V-Set will similar comfort to the current rather than having those fugly Oscars doing all the interurban runs.

Both Perth's and Brisbane's trains are made at the same factory - at Walkers in Maryborough Qld.

The old tuna fish can in Sydney is like a death trap in hot humid summer. Since not all of them have air on. And the seats! Your body will just mould around it because it makes your whole back sticky!

I haven't spent that much time traveling by train in Sydney so I'm going by the the pics I saw in wikipedia and I as much as it pains me to say it but the Millenium's are pretty noyce. Our new siemen's are a huge disappointment, I expected much better.

What might redeem the Siemens trains is that when they're thirty years old, they won't look as worn out as other trains of similar age because of the stainless steel body.

The graffiti seems to come off the smooth stainless steel pretty easy too.

Gotta love the R/S sets! Except on hot days, I always aim to catch one of those .

A real train - about 50x better than a shitty plasticy unreliable Melbourne Comeng.

AustraliaCentral you need your eyes checked.

The Comengs (and Hitachis and Siemens for that matter), are the ugliest things (The Connex Comengs are slighlty better on the outside than the M>Comengs).

The X'trapolis are ok, the best Melbourne has, but pretty bland compared to Perths.

Victoria's V'loCity V/Line intercity trains are pretty damn sexy, though!!

Similar front to the trains in Perth and Brisbane.

The fact is though, all things considered, when you realise that a lot of these sets are 30+ years old, the fact that they still look presentable in many cases is remarkable.

Also, they're one of the few train types that doesn't look so bad when they get dirty.

Personally, I'd rather they have designed a new train based on this design (at least to the untrained eye) but heavily modernised. Similar for the V-Sets (though I'd keep similar seats).

Don't get me wrong, I like the Millennium train too, but there's something about the exterior of these trains that exudes 'workhorse'.

In addition, these things are quite respectable when they get some speed as they do on the Western Line. The same can definitely not be said for the Tangarbages.

OMG so true, I am glad someone agrees with me that the new OSCARs look fecking horrible, worse than the R and S sets. Why couldn't they just copy the millenium design better, they just stuffed the styling of the OSCARs completely. I will never know why they gave the contact to goninans, with all the problems of tangaras and lateral sway I would have though the contract would have gone to reliance rail. I still find the tangaras when clean look more modern and cutting-edge than even the milleniums. I think Goninas should have exanded on this design for future work rather than come up with pure aesthetic shite like they have.

The Milleniums look good but a little chunky from some angles. The angles at the front are great but I wished they have gone for wrapped overhead windows on the top deck (like the tangaras).

I like all the old silver ridgies, they still look good for their age they work well. Such a Sydney staple it will be sad to see them go. The new PPP trains do look hot however, so happy reliance rail got the contract!

The V-sets are quite old now and still look incredible, there is just something about them that refuses to be displaced. Easily the best of all, they are much-loved by me.
