(Shanghai Daily, Aug. 21)

Quote:
BEIJING, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- Beijing's afforestation watchdog has said it will turn to satellite monitoring to expose fake green drives in the city and prevent the misuse of plantation funds, local media reported on Tuesday.

"To strengthen the supervision of our forest land management cost, we are planning to use five satellites over Beijing to monitor forest land," Deng Naiping, head of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Landscape and Forestry, was quoted as saying by The Beijing News.

Deng, who was speaking at a conference of the city's forestry officials on Monday, said satellite monitoring will help expose embezzlement of plantation management funds. He said there have been reports of forestry officials in other cities making false claims of the plantation funds.

China unveils ambitious space projects
(China Daily, Aug. 22)

Quote:
BEIJING -- China will launch several space projects, including a hard X-ray telescope for black hole studies, between 2014 and 2016, according to a senior Chinese astronomer.

Su Dingqiang, an academic at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and former president of the Chinese Astronomical Society, revealed some details regarding the hard x-ray modulation telescope (HXMT), China's first space telescope, on Tuesday at the opening ceremony of the International Astronomical Union (IAU)'s 28th General Assembly.

The hard X-ray band is a key waveband for high-energy astrophysics studies. Hard X-rays originate mostly from regions close to black holes and have high penetrative power, making them important tools for studying physical processes in extreme conditions, such as high matter density and high energy density.

System makes local residents' TVs 'smart'
(Shanghai Daily, Aug. 23)

Quote:
THE first thing that retired local housewife Xiao Anli does every morning is turn on her television. That's how she finds out which grocery store has the lowest price, how long she would need to wait at nearby hospitals and what the traffic and parking conditions are like around her home.

After entering her identity card number, she can also check her medical history and make appointments with doctors at hospitals in the area. She can also pay utility bills and even shop at a nearby supermarket through the TV, with products delivered to her home in 10 minutes.

"I think the services at a five-star hotel would be no greater than that," the 56-year-old Xiao told Shanghai Daily. Xiao's family and hundreds of other families in the Gumei Neighborhood of Shanghai's Minhang District became the first local families to gain access to a "Smart Community" network as the district government signed a contract with China Telecom yesterday.

Space exploration has become a national priority for China — and a Hong Kong scientist appointed to an international body searching for alien life says he is confident many of us will live to see the first evidence of extra-terrestrial life.

It was at the opening of the General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union in Beijing that it dawned upon Professor Sun Kwok, the University of Hong Kong's dean of science, just how seriously China takes the quest for space exploration.

To the surprise and delight of Kwok and his colleagues, the assembly at the end of August was opened by the country's Vice-President Xi Jinping who made it clear China was determined to be not only a world leader but a pioneer in intergalactic affairs too.

China builds world's fastest supercomputer

BEIJING, June 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese supercomputer producer announced Monday that China has once again built the world's fastest supercomputer, capable of performing 33.86 quadrillion operations per second, surpassing the U.S. Titan supercomputer.

The Tianhe-2 has a peak performance speed of 54.9 quadrillion operations per second, according to the National University of Defense Technology, which built the computer.

The computer's predecessor, the Tianhe-1A, was the world's fastest supercomputer from November 2010 to June 2011, when it was surpassed by Japan's K computer.
