actually in the academic field english is a quasi official language as so many foreigners are working here. So you won't have any problems! Of course it is nice if you learn german if you're here, but its not really neccessairy in resaerch.

Do you know if there are any decent cancer research centres at academic institutions in Berlin out of interest?
indeed... there's the MDC (http://www.mdc-berlin.de/), a research center for molecular biology and the Robert -Roessle- Klinik which specializes in cancer which works in collaboration with the MDC

I'm looking to study an Urban Planning related course at UT Berlin in 2010.

In the meantime i'm going to be taking a German language course through the Goethe Institut here in Melbourne.

Excellent link, thank you very much!

I'm also surprised to hear that German isn't a requirement in academia (surprised and very pleased might I add)! I think you just managed to make my day as if what you told me is true it does lend some hope to the idea that I may someday be able to move to Berlin to give life there a try.

you mean TU Berlin? A german language course is a good idea... The TU is actually a very international university, though I'm not sure if there're many english lectures. Moreover it's the one of the three big universities which has the lowest budget ... so don't expect too much. You should also take a look at the other german facilities to find the one with the best expertise on your field.

as I said, the research facilities are really international, on the universitary level it might be very different though.
you should try to contact people who have experiences as foreign researcher in Germany... maybe you just E-Mail around the MDC lists
