Naprosto souhlasim.

Definitely when you go to Paris or Rome, it's much more worse and less safe than in Prague or Liberec.. I've seen many street crimes in these two cities when I've been there.

Smile Beroun pronounced Historic Town of the Year 2009

Beroun pronounced Historic Town of the Year 2009

The Central Bohemian town of Beroun has just earned the title of Historic Town of the Year 2009. The prize, which comes with a million crown award for the city, honors towns and cities in the Czech Republic that have excelled in preserving and renewing their monuments and historic buildings. Sarah Borufka reports.

BerounBeroun The Historic Town of the Year 2009 award ceremony took place in Prague on Tuesday. This year’s title went to the Central Bohemian town of Beroun. The prize, which honors the great work that has been done in renewing Beroun’s historic core and preserving its monuments, comes with a monetary award of one million Czech crowns. The Ministry of Culture has been awarding the prize Historic Town of the Year for over ten years. In 2009, fifty-two towns competed for the prestigious award.

Petr Sedláček, the head of the Association of Historic Settlements and a member of the award committee, explains why Beroun was chosen for first place this year.

“Beroun impressed us in terms of the preservation work that was done there, which was really quite demanding. The Ministry of Regional Development appreciated that renovations in Beroun were done in a way that really preserved the historic core of the town. And aside from that, I personally really valued the great restoration after the 2002 floods. I think the town has really demonstrated a great commitment to the revitalization of this former royal residence.”

Jiří BesserJiří Besser Beroun’s historic buildings did not just suffer damages during the 2002 floods. Forty years of communist rule also left its mark on the town. Pollution grew during that time and many historic monuments were destroyed by the communists.

Beroun’s mayor Jiří Besser says the award money will go towards further preservation projects.

“We will use it again towards some projects in the historic part of our town. For this year, we have planned a number of events that could use some funding, so the city council will decide how the funds will be used in detail at its yearly budget meeting.”

The award is part of a Ministry of Culture program aimed at revitalizing historic monuments and historic city centers across the Czech Republic. Since its inception, it has funded the renovation of over 10,000 monuments. The head of the Association of Historic Settlements, Petr Sedláček, says that the program has brought life back to many Czech towns.

BerounBeroun “This program really helps Czech towns to jumpstart long-term revitalization. In a number of cases, we are already reaping the benefits of such revitalization projects. Housing and employment are returning to those towns. They are not some sort of outdoor museum, but places where people can live.”

Last year, the program provided a total of four billion Czech crowns to preservation projects.

Question Technical trip to Prague

Hi,
I'm university teacher from Warsaw University of Technology. Together with another teacher and group of 20 student from Bridge and Underground Structures Specialization we are going to visit Prague on 17th-22nd May. It is technical trip, so except of visiting traditional Prague monuments (and maybe pubs - do you have any pubs there? ;-)) we want to visit some interesting building sites and see interesting structures. Till now we have organized four visits:
- Blanka tunnel (visit prepared by Satra),
- Myslbekova-Prašný most (MYPRA) - tunnel on the Prague ring (visit prepared by D2 Consult),
- large bridge across the rivers Berounka and Veltava is in the south part of the Prague
- one undefined-till-now tunnel (visit prepared by Metrostav)
I have huge request:
Can you suggest me more bridge or underground structures under construction in Prague and in the neighbourhood of Prague, which we could see? It can be also finished structures - new and old ones - but interesting because of their engineering concept.
If you can list them below, write name of the place and few sentences, why it is interesting. Maybe some of you can also help us to organize visit on such place...? We will be thankful...

Maybe you could visit the Prague collectors - tunnels under the city centre for cables, pipelines etc...

There are currently collectors under construction, but I think that the collector tours only take you to the finished ones.

Here is an introduction:http://www.kolektory.cz/en/index/03_o_kolektorech.html
And here are the tours: http://www.kolektory.cz/en/index/10_zt.html

Have a nice time in Prague

Thanks a lot... I've been checking answers to my post every 15 minutes ;-) Your suggestion looks very interesting. I think we will visit this place - it is a great structure because of its localization and size. I will contact them tomorrow. Maybe for non-commercial group (it is investment in education of young engineers ;-)) there will be a special price. Thanks.

You could visit building site of Lochkovský (Lochkov) bridge too, it's on the Prague outer ring

There's also metro line A prolongation going on at several places, but it's in early stages.

Thanks a lot. I see co-contractors are Hochtief and Strabag - we have their branches in Poland, so we can ask for help in contacts with Czech branch. Thanks.

I don't know if this is of any interest to you, but there's a popular tv show here about tourism and argentinians living abroad, and today's show is about Prague... and I'm still trying to pick up my jaw off the floor. I'm blown away really, I find it the most beautiful city in Europe, to say the least. You guys probably know this already but whatever.
Congratulations for such a jewel, I'm dying to go and check it out myself.

Gracias tío! Es verdad que es una des las ciudades más hermosas de Europa, peró hay demasiado turistas...the historic centre lacks authentic local atmosphere, as there are only very few Czechs left living in the centre, it's quite overrun by tourists. Still, one of the most beautiful cities!

Yes I got quite a shock at the change between 1999 and 2009 - worst thing was tracking down good Czech food amongst all the American junk food! But it's now an international city, it is bound to happen. Still plenty of Czechs in the centre though, just get away from the main tourist strips. The rest are in their panelaks and chalupas.

Hello for about three days I'm coming in Prague.
I have two questions. Can you tell me some nice disco places, I found something but I want to hear some opinions.
Second one, where can I watch football games (current World Cup) somewhere in the city center, are there some bars with TV's?

Thanks in advance

Bars with TV are everywhere and there's a big screen broadcasting football matches from RSA at Old town square in the city centre, you won't miss it.
Largest disco in central Europe is Klub Lavka near Charles bridge at Old town side of the city.

Thanks. Of course, we have visited this. We finished our visit in Praque almost three months ago! But thanks anyway.... I hope soon I will find free time to present here some interesting pictures of visited building sites with short comment. Especially from tunnels...

Things to do in Brno

Hello all,

I'm off to Brno for a few nights at the end of the month following an invitation from a friend. Any suggestions what I can do to fill my time, places to go, things to see during the day? What's the nightlife like?
