#NAREEL ISLAND: COCONUT ISLAND

Coconut Island will bring a new level of luxury to Abu Dhabi and is destined to be one of the most exclusive developments in the region with its exceptional facilities and superb location.

Aldar signed a joint venture agreement with National Corporation for Tourism and Hotels (NCTH) to develop Coconut Island in 2007. The resort is due to open in 2011, and includes a high-end residential community, stunning lagoon, a marina, a world class spa, and now, a spectacular new Ritz-Carlton hotel.

'The Coconut Island project will introduce a sophisticated, elegant oasis to the heart of Abu-Dhabi, offering an exclusive hideaway for discerning international and regional patrons,' commented Ronald S. Barrott, CEO, Aldar Properties. 'By signing this management agreement to bring the first Ritz-Carlton hotel to Abu-Dhabi Aldar and NCTH are clearly demonstrating their commitment to bring a new class of development to the Emirate.'

The island will be linked to the mainland by a private dual carriageway, ensuring limited traffic on the island, and the ultimate privacy for residents of the gated community and visitors to the hotel and marina alike. With sea views from every angle, the island will be a destination in itself, with The Ritz-Carlton, Abu Dhabi as a jewel in its crown.

'The Ritz-Carlton, Abu Dhabi on Coconut Island plays a key role in our group's regional expansion in the Middle East,' says Simon Cooper, President and Chief Operating Officer of The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company. 'We are delighted that, with this agreement with Aldar Properties, we are able to introduce The Ritz-Carlton service values to this capital city and provide a new, exciting luxury hotel experience for our loyal guests.'

Designed by Malaysia-based Denniston International Architects and Planners, the 160-room resort is comprised of 130 guestrooms, and 30 suites and deluxe villas. 'Aldar Hotels and Hospitality seeks to partner with the best of the best in international design and luxury hospitality providers, such as the Ritz-Carlton, and the world-class designers and architects that will work on the project,' commented Paul Bell, Managing Director, Aldar Hotels & Hospitality.

Most of the rooms will be artfully designed over multiple landscape levels, ensuring unobstructed sea and lagoon views. All villas and suites will include water features with swimming pools and spacious sundecks. Resort rooms will be a minimum of 55 square metres in size, while the luxury villas range from 130 to 230 square metres.

About Aldar Hotels and Hospitality

Land reclamation complete for shaping Coconut Island in Abu Dhabi
Tuesday, January 08, 2008

One of the prominent realty developers of Abu Dhabi, ALDAR Properties PJSC, has announced completion of its land reclamation and dredging for the major island resort and gated residential development at the Abu Dhabi West Coast.

This project is a combined effort through partnership with National Corporation for Tourism and Hotels (NCT &H) and is due for completion by 2010.

At present, the approval of master plan of Coconut Island, and the appointment of architects for the projects have been done. The new lagoon of the island, which would form the center-piece of the project, has taken shape. The next step to be done is soil investigation, soil improvement and shoreline protection works, prior to commencing the buildings and other infrastructure works.

Coconut Island is expected to be a five star luxury resort, comprising 160 guest rooms, a spa, restaurants and marina. The island has a sand bar encompassed by clear turquoise waters thereby providing idyllic setting for relaxation. Apart from the resort, the island will have three and four bedroom apartment buildings, and six, five and four bedroom villas, and other spectacular views of the Arabian Gulf.

Senior Project Leader, ALDAR Properties, Rami Hreiki, said that both ALDAR and NCT&H, together, will continue to strive to bring this exciting project to fruition.

Aldar appoints architect for island
by Conrad Egbert on Saturday, 10 May 2008

Abu Dhabi-based property developer Aldar has appointed RW Armstrong & Associates as 'architect of record' for its Coconut Island project in Abu Dhabi.

The island resort project, which will be a gated residential development, is located off the west coast of Abu Dhabi and will be a joint venture with National Corporation for Tourism and Hotels (NCT&H).

The contract will see RW Armstrong & Associates prepare detailed architectural and engineering designs as well as supervise construction, ensuring design objectives are met. The project is expected to be completed in early 2011.

"Both ALDAR and NCT&H are equally committed to upholding high quality standards in all aspects of their work; to deliver on the spectacular promise that Coconut Island holds," said Rami Hreiki, senior development manager of Aldar Properties.

"We welcome RW Armstrong on board the project and look forward to working with them in raising the bar for Abu Dhabi's real estate developments."

Coconut Island will have Abu Dhabi's first Ritz Carlton resort, and a number of four- and three-bedroom apartment buildings.

Hill McGlynn & Associates

Senior Site Architect Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

This American Architectural and Engineering firm was set up in 1961 to focus on designing and delivering Airports and complex buildings. With 11 offices in the US and 5 covering the Middle East, they currently have 100 people working in an Abu Dhabi office which has been established for 3 years. Of these, 20 are architects split betwen office and site.
They are looking for a Senior Site Architect to report directly to the VP Design on the delivery of numerous large scale schemes in Abu Dhabi and the surrounding region, including towers and commercial/residential towers. As well as this, they are currently working on the development of hotels and luxury villas on Nareel Island for Aldar, as well as the Gate District for Sorouh on Reem Island.

The role will incorporate similar responsibilities as a Resident Engineer, leading an external consultant team of 50 people and an internal team of at least 10. This is effectively a number two on site to the Senior PM, dealing with RFIs, site issues and resolving them.

Naturally each candidate should have a minimum of a Degree in Architecture and at least 10 years' market experience, preferably having worked in the GCC. A strong appreciation of Civil and Structural Engineering is required, as is a proven ability to lead a combined consultant team of over 40 people on site. Having delivered a complex building is also a necessity, preferably either a tower over 30 storeys or a mixed use development.

Attitude is also very important. The right candidate will be able to demonstrate a proactive attitude and an ability to deal effectively with the contractor and client, but also be able to demonstrate an ability to be flexible when the situation requires it. Candidates unwilling to learn new techniques, who believe there can only be one way to achieve a goal will not fit in well within this team environment.

This is a firm where each level of staff is listened to on an equal basis. Changes to the firm are made based on suggestions from the lower level up, and each member of the company is given a tailored training programme to further develop their ability and career.

To apply for this role, please contact Adam Street.

This seems to be the new project name for Coconut Islands, facing the Intercon.

I think Aldar will wait until the Yas island and Al-Raha projects are done before they start with this one.
No need to hurry things in a global recession.

They've only built this fab house. It's been up for at least 5 months. I see they've recently started bringing more materials to the site so maybe more are planned???

If you look at the picture I took back in May of 2011 - that's exactly how it looks now . They had built up a huge amount of construction materials over there. But all that ended up being for the road works on Bainunah (34th Street) and Corniche Road West. With that project wrapping up, all those materials are gone, and nothing it being done on the island. Although it does look like they are putting down some fresh sod around the house . I'll post a pic later on...
