yup. unless, you like looking at plants and trees... they are not obvious subjects... got lots of mosquito bites though... must remember to bring insect repellant whenever I go there alone.

I was thinking of a morning + sunrise shoot at Marina City Park... but, can't wake up this morning... aching all over from yesterday's duties...

The first time I got to Singapore I was absolutely amazed by the ammount of greenery here. I had read in a guide book that it was a green city but I didn't expect that much. I had seen photos of very dense areas of S'pore filled with high-rise blocks and I thought 'how can there be any greenery there?'. It was very very good foresight of the authorities to have pressed this issue so hard as far back as the 1960s. I cannot name a single city of anywhere near this size that has anything even approaching the ammount of greenery S'pore has.

Was there an article report that the government to now trying another way of planting trees? In 1960s, they planted yellow flame, rain trees as they grow fast so as to build a green city. Then in the 1980s, they wanted to plant flowers to beautify the area. But now, they came out a new one, which is something like trees that look artistic and interesting. Something like pine trees? Or trees like oak or whatever that shed leaves in autumn..they say is something like good structure sort of trees. I think they are planting quite many new trees at AYE and these trees shed leaves.

Angsanas (along Orchard Road) don't provide much shade, but the foilage is very dense..

Rain Trees are the best for shade. The look very beautiful too.

that area looks like a place worth checking out

Angsana tree along Braddell Road centre of attention

5 Feb 05

An angsana tree along Braddell Road is in a unique situation.

Since December, the tree has been the centre of attraction for passing motorists and the public.

Construction work along Braddell Road has led to most trees around the area to be cleared.

But the 75-year-old angsana tree was spared due to its rarity.

What would have been a normal 3-lane road now splits into two to accommodate the tree.

The road then joins back several metres later.

The tree, which cost $200,000 to save, has the honour of being the first tree saved by the Land Transport Authority since it was set up 11 years ago.

Some years back, NParks spent $100,000 on road diversion and drainage system to preserve an angsana tree along Upper Serangoon Road.

That tree was more than 80 years old.

NParks said the tree was worth at least $80,000.

NParks has its own tree valuation system so that when a decision is made to fell trees, it will be an informed decision.

But for the saved angsana tree along Braddell Road, initial reactions ranged from those who felt it was dangerous to have a split road after a bend, to those who thought it plain awkward.

However, enough time has passed for people to adjust.

"I didn't know about this on my first day, and got a shock that the road had suddenly changed," said senior bus captain Tan Chin Wah.

"But now I'm used to this route already, so I will take care when passing by."

For those who earlier lauded the move as a sign that development need not clash with nature, they remain happy.

"People should learn how to save trees," said student Devi.

NParks says that while no compliments have been sent in, there have been no complaints either.

It plans to continue protecting trees around the island, through its tree management programme.

maybe, school should make gardening a compulsory subject since the goal is to create a city in a garden. I wanted to grow some flowers in my planter. However, not too sure how to do that. :p

hmmm...are planters in highrise condominiums well made use of?

I know in HDB flats many use the corridors and convert them to 'hanging gardens'

Things you see at the planters are:
1) Deck Chairs
2) Potted Plants
3) Water Feature
4) Nothing

This seems to be what I note whenever I visit a highrise condo...so I'd really like to see what a well-planted planter can look like! There was once I actually mistook it for a balcony and wondered why it was so small...
