I've never actually noticed those red flower bushes!

I hope there can be more variety of colours amongst the street vegetation (like this)...but the pic looks really vivid

The breeze, when it blows overs such an expanse of vegetation, also tends to be cooler

Botanic Gardens fully opens its doors to visitors after four years

11 July 2006 2249 hrs (SST)

Source: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stori...218540/1/.html

SINGAPORE : Singapore's flagship park, the Botanic Gardens, will be open to the public this weekend.

The "soft opening" will coincide with the opening of a food court named "Taman Serasi Food Garden."

After four years of renovations, the Singapore Botanic Gardens will be fully opened to the public.

Extensive construction and landscaping works have been carried out, and pavilions, libraries and landscaped gardens have been added to the Botanic Gardens.

People coming to the gardens will still see some works in progress, but it will be safe for the public to visit.

"This represents the final step in the rejuvenation process of botanic gardens and it contains the heart and soul of the botanic gardens. This is where our reference collections are, namely our library, the herbarium, and some of our living plant collections will be centred around here. This is the Centre of Botany for our Botanic Gardens. We are in the process of bringing in the wide diversity of tropical plants that we can find in the region to enliven this landscape here," said Dr Tan Wee Kiat, advisor at NParks.

The beautifully landscaped gardens give the impression that the buildings are sprouting out of the garden, and there are also rooftop gardens.

And what is a walk in the park without food in the stomach?

"We've always had a F&B (corner) in the garden. But now we've staged F&B in three different levels. We have fine dining, mid-level dining and now we are going to have a food garden. It's basically a food court - the new version of the Taman Serasi Food Court," said Dr Wee.

Boasting 11,500 square feet of space for 350 people, the new food court's owners hope to recreate the variety and ambience of its old namesake.

"The new Taman Serasi Food Garden will open on July 15. It is going to be the new and improved version of the old Taman Serasi Hawker Centre. We're located at the same place, just across Cluny Road. We are keeping the flavour of the old food centre and we're going to try and improve it. We've got some very good tenants in as well," said businessman Jack Poon.

The food centre will open this Saturday (July 15) while the Singapore Botanic Gardens official opening ceremony will be at a later date.

Foodcourt opens in last phase of Botanic Gardens revamp

AFTER three years of intensive upgrading, the Singapore Botanic Gardens yesterday unveiled the final stage of its $100 million redevelopment project that began back in 1989.

The final phase, which cost $38 million, includes a new foodcourt, laboratories with glass windows and a basement carpark.

The foodcourt, called Taman Serasi Food Garden, is expected to be the main attraction, as it offers cheap local food within the garden premises for the first time.

The underground centre includes an alfresco dining area. But there is no breathtaking view of the garden's greenery.

Botanic Gardens director Chin See Chung said he hopes the foodcourt will help attract more local visitors.

'The garden sees an entire spectrum of visitors, from Singapore heartlanders to foreign diplomats. We need to cater to all tastes and adding a foodcourt will appeal to the locals. Also, not all foreigners want to eat at restaurants,' he said.

About half of the three million people who visit the garden annually are foreigners, most of them tourists.

Other eateries in the garden - Cafe Les Amis, French restaurant Au Jardin Les Amis and ginger-themed Halia Restaurant - have upmarket dining with matching prices.

Mr Jack Poon, who manages the Taman Serasi Food Garden, said food prices have been deliberately kept low.

'People often complain it is hard to find cheap local food in this area. Even nearby Gleneagles Hospital and Tanglin Mall do not have cheap hawker-style food,' he said.

Mr Poon said he tried tracking down the old hawkers from the old Taman Serasi hawker centre across the road, such as the famous roti john stall, but they all declined to relocate.

Even so, Mr Poon made sure he has reputable hawker names on show, like the famous Jalan Kayu prata shop and the Hong Kong roast duck stall from the Marina Square foodcourt.

Mr Shawn Siaw and his family were one of the first Singaporeans to dine there after it opened yesterday. Although he was slightly disappointed that none of the old Taman Serasi hawkers is back, he said he would eat there again.

Said the aircraft maintenance administrator, 34: 'It is very convenient to come here now that there's a big carpark. This is a big improvement from the old times.'
