NEW YORK | 150 Myrtle Street | 38 fl | Com

Another great tower. It is not being built in Manhattan, though.

It'll be interesting to see this once it's completed.

Interesting looking tower, but I don't know how it will age.

Are there many highrises outside Manhattan?

There's some all over, almost in every direction and borough of the city, and maybe a supertall or two in the coming years. Downtown Brooklyn has a huge skyline and other places in the city outside of Manhattan have small skylines too. The day NY gets a supertall that's not on Manhattan Island will be great. In fact, I think they are planning one on Long Island, but it's not in the city, and there was a supertall just killed on Brooklyn, but I am sure Brooklyn will be the second borough to have a supertall.

They're both inspired by things from nature as well. With Aqua, it's waves; with 150 Myrtle Street, it feels inspired by winter.

150 Myrtle Street looks like an ice palace emerging from a glitchy facade, I love it.

Skidmore Owings and Merrill's New York office has come up with this rippling design that is now under construction in their home city.

Currently going up in Brooklyn at 150 Myrtle Street, construction for the tower called Toren has so far seen it reach the first floor above the podium.

When completed it will be stand at 38 storeys tall and contain 240 apartments within. There will be ground floor retail and a fitness centre plus swimming pool and two levels of basement parking also included in the scheme.

Condo towers are ten a penny in New York but this one breaks away from the norm with its façade that ripples and undulates in a similar manner to Studio Gang's Aqua Tower in Chicago.

The differences however are notable in the building materials employed with SOM having plumped for a monochromatic mix of aluminium and glass.
One of the advantages of this, particularly with the clumps of lighter glazing around the corners is to fool the eye by giving what appears to be an abstract form to a regularly shaped tower.

The colour scheme helps to give it less of a feel of rippling water and more than a touch of a melting lump of ice that is drizzling the street below with its patterns aluminium dripping off the freezing glass.

Despite the relatively high price that apartments at 150 Myrtle Street command for such an "edgy" area (by that they really mean gentrifying), sales have already proven a success, no doubt driven by the buildings aesthetics. Completion of Toren is due in 2010.

Good for Brooklyn. I love how NYC is developing skylines outside of Manhattan.
