How about, if you're doing something that takes your attention off the road and cause an accident, you're considered at fault?

I think the reason people want an anti-cell law in addition to existing laws is that we would be able to prevent more accidents rather than just punish the offenders after the fact. It would also be one more tool police could use to combat reckless driving.

Oh god...one of my oldest friends, whom I worked with for years, treats driving time as "office catch-up" time. Literally, 85-95% of the time he is driving, he is either talking on the Crackberry, or reading or sending emails. Along with his other bad driving habits (too ingrained to even convince they are stupid, let alone make an effort to correct them), he is clearly a serious menace (too many close calls to remember). Old friend or not...sleepy-byes for him. People might do many other things while they are driving that have an impairment effect, but yacking on phones is just so widespread...it just becomes one bad habit people do constantly. I hate cell phones in general, because of the rudeness factor...I think we'd all be better off in general if they just banned cell phones and ipods outright. KGB |

What do you expect from someone who follows a period with two exclamation marks?

He actually started a sentence with a period and two exclamation points, and forgot to put in a space.
But I'm not going to descent to bashing an entire country.

I'd like to see some statistics that purport that the banning of cell phone use while driving correlates to lower accident rates. I'm willing to bet that there is no proof. Cell phones don't cause accidents, bad drivers do.
What about hands-free cellphones, should they be banned too? |

That's like saying drunk driving shouldn't be banned because alcohol in one's blood doesn't cause accidents, bad drivers do. It's just false. There is real evidence that cell phones, like alcohol, cause accidents. And by the way, there is evidence that hands-free units cause accidents as well. |

Uh oh, I can see I'm dealing with a heavyweight intellectual here. Just look at the way my points are being refuted in a logical manner.
![]() I don't get why some people keep comparing talking on the phone with drinking and driving? The fact that having alcohol in the bloodstream hinders your ability to safely drive is a fact that can be proven scientifically. On the other hand there is no such proof that talking on the cell phone hinders one's driving ability to any greater degree than just talking with another passenger in the car, eating, smoking, tuning the radio, or any other of hundreds of things people do while driving. Should we ban all talking? What about voice recognition which is becoming popular in cars, is talking to your car's GPS more or less distracting than talking to someone on a hands-free phone? |
