No- 5th and Columbia needs to go right where it's planned. That gap needs to be filled by a dramatic modern beauty.

But I'd love a supertall there!! We're just dreaming of course but it would be nice!

Of course, the school could be built in a 500 ft building. And the park could be built on top of another one. No sense in wasting good urban space - have your cake and eat it too.

Hell no! They should just push to get 3 55 story towers a la 1201 Second Ave. Or even a 700' a 600' and a 500' with generous outdoor plazas/greenspace for the new foot traffic.

The Clise rep said the planned devlopement is in line with their plans for the whole lot of land- meaning built out completely. Definitely no schools or parks in that plan. The Clises have been firm on that.

Saw this in an article, hopefully it's not exactly right. The last sentence doesn't exactly make sense to me.

Quote:
Amazon won’t need any zoning variances to build the enormous towers, Clise said. Current zoning allows buildings up to 500 feet in height and containing a million square feet or more on the parcels that Amazon is purchasing, he said.

Exciting news! I, too, hope they won't all be the same height, but I can live with it.

To me its saying that the cap of 500 is all they will need...which kind of crushes the idea of anything taller. I really dont want to see 3 boxy 500fters all compacted.

As exciting as I am about the potential for the Amazon towers, it doesn't sound like any of them will be a signature tower. In fact, I could see the additional office space saturating the already over-saturated downtown Seattle office market. That could kill chances for any sort of signature tower this decade.

Sorry to be a negative Ned...just wanted mention some of the repercussions of the plan. I personally would rather see one 80+ floor signature tower.

Part of me feels the same then I think of Houston/LA (bad) and great cities that don't have signatures that tall but pack punches with sheer style, density and crazy street level design (Paris and London at the top of the list). Five hundred feet is nothing to sneeze at. Could be "WOWs" if done right.

I'm happy its being resolved sooner than later.

Just because they don't NEED to go above 500' doesn't necessarily mean they won't give it a shot. I think he's just saying it's doable under current zoning. If you look at 1918 8th- that is a sizable tower. Three more of those, if done right is pretty awesome. I'd personally rather see three underutilized lots bite the dust than one for a signature tower. And I actually like Columbia being out tallest- its pretty bad ass even a couple decades later.

According to Wikipedia, 1918 is only 658,000 square feet. So these would have to be a lot wider, I guess.

Anyway, I feel obligated to re-post this picture from a few years ago:

How can it affect the available office space if Amazon is going to occupy the space?

1918 is already pretty wide, so I do wonder how they'll do it.

From what I gather from friends at Amazon it is most likely all that office space will be Amazon ..all of it. They were saying that they were already out of room the day they finished the last building. They're working in very cramped quarters right now even with the new space. Since they are not really developers I can't imagine them wanting to take chances on filling up those buildings with other tenants.

Exactly- so it can't negatively impact the office market.

Hey any of you old timers remember this from like 10 years back? Only image I could find is an old tab, it has been lost to the deepest parts of the WWW:

The old Marathon office project that never was, they are 500 feet C'mon Amazon!

Isn't this a little scary though? It seems like Amazon is overextending itself, how long can it keep up this incredible growth?

The thing with Amazon as a hybrid tech company/retailer, they are only going to get more business as the economy picks up, and all tech companies can't get enough engineers and programmers as it is right now. So they have both retail/business (Amazon.com) and a R&D needs. They are really going all in with the Kindle Fire, which is quickly becoming THE alternative to the iPad.

But I'm also somewhat skeptical about filling 3 million sq ft. But they definitely know more about what they need more that we do.
