Parking lot?

The lot bounded by Westlake, Valley, Terry and Mercer, the one which had the contaminated soil removed, is now partly paved over in asphalt and looks terrible. Does anyone know what the plans are for this large city block? I'd hate for it to end up as a parking lot. Why would it be paved over if it were going to be built upon--even eventually?

When does that construction nightmare begin?

Doesn't have to be a nightmare. From what I recall, the plan is to build a roadway to the north of the existing road, switch traffic to that, then rebuild the existing roadway. I doubt it'll be less than three lanes at any point in time.

Supposedly the city settled their dispute with West Marine. They should have moved by now I would have thought. All land would have been acquired by now. They also have to 'move' the old Cadillac dealership which means to disassemble and store the architecturally significant pieces. Word was that construction should begin by the end of the summer, but I don't know.

Oh! By the way, they don't have enough money to fully fund this yet!

Uh oh! The asphalt has now been delineated for parking spaces, numbers and all. It looks absolutely terrible on that corner (Westlake and Valley). I'm so disappointed. I tried to call the Seattle Parks Foundation, which is spearheading the park redevelopment across Valley (and they are located in the old Armory), but they were closed today. They very well might have information. The long-time lot near the armory and to the north of this new monstrosity has been partially closed for demo where the new pond will sit , so I'm not sure if this new lot has anything to do with that closure. There is still part of that block (Terry/Mercer/Wetlake/Valley) which could be used for staging for the Mercer project--this new lot takes up about two thirds of the area.

Long term plans were for that and the next three blocks to be mid rise residential on one side, office/biotech on the Mercer side. I'm sure this is 10+ years away.

God... we've been bickering about it for ages, I hope they can just build it already. That part of town is horrendous.

That has temporary written all over it. I thought any parking lot over 10 spaces required lighting and landscaping.

Another crane came down today on the block south of Republican with the old brick building that's being integrated into the Amazon offices. "Only" 4 cranes on two different blocks left standing!

Only three cranes remain as one is coming down today.

I was told recently that the first Amazon staff are arriving in May to the new campus. I think this is pretty accurate but I don't know for sure.

The Mercer Mess project?

It's (likely) dead. I don't think McGinn is very keen for it.

I thought they were like only $50million away from turning dirt? I'm pretty sure this is going forward. All the land is acquired, the plans are approved. Just need a little more money.

There's a big stimulus grant request pending. Otherwise, I don't know what the backup plan is.

McGinn ought to favor it. It would be a big boost for the biking and walking situation in that area (particularly Valley St.), while not adding more traffic lanes. Phase 2, along with the tunnel, would knit SLU and LQA back together.
