The unused, unneeded lanes are HOV lanes.

The express lanes in the center weren't open to traffic yet when this aerial video was taken.

US 85, Watford City, ND

NDDOT opens Truck Bypasses to traffic near Watford City today

The North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) has opened both the Watford City ND 23 Southeast Truck Bypass and the US 85 Southwest Truck Bypass to traffic today. Both bypasses accommodate four lanes of traffic, with turning lanes.

Watford City Bypass Projects:
* The Watford City ND 23 Southeast Bypass project connects ND Highway 23 to the east of Watford City to US 85 south of Watford City.
* The Watford City US 85 Southwest Bypass west of Watford City connects to US Highway 85 southwest of the city.
Full press release: http://www.dot.nd.gov/dotnet2/news/d...rdbypasses.pdf

Truck traffic on US 85 has exploded in recent years due to the oil production in the Bakken Formation. Watford City is a typical oil town with lots of temporary trailer housing. The U.S. Census Bureau estimates an 88% population growth in Watford City since 2010.

Abandoned sector of Pennsylvania Turnpike

A neat drone video of autumn colors and the alignment of the old Pennsylvania Turnpike section near Breezewood, decommissioned sometime in the 1970s (don't remember exactly when)

What's with that black underneath the white road markings? I see them on the M25 as well, but that's only because they couldn't erase the white from the surface properly, so they had to hide them with black paint in order to make them white again. British logic...

They are used to add contrast between the white stripes and the light coloured concrete driving surface.
