SH 288, Houston, TX

Transportation Commission Awards SH 288 Toll Concession Project

The Texas Transportation Commission today approved a public-private partnership to develop, design, construct, finance, operate and maintain tolled lanes and general purpose lanes for a 10.3-mile segment of SH 288 from US 59 to the Harris County line. This will include the design, construction, maintenance and operation of direct connectors at Beltway 8. The toll concession project represents the first in the Houston area where a private contractor will design, finance, build, operate and maintain the facility.

(...)

Additionally, the project includes construction of direct connectors to provide access from SH 288 tolled lanes to the Texas Medical Center; eight direct connectors at Beltway 8; and rebuilds most of the I-610/SH 288 interchange.

Design and construction is expected to move forward in late 2015 with an estimated completion in early 2019. This option provides much-needed improvements years before conventional methods could be implemented.
A large project, but the existing SH 288 freeway has a very wide median that was built with express lanes in mind in the 1980s. Most money will likely go into all those direct connectors and interchanges.

SH 288 is always packed in the morning and afternoon. I guess that's why they want to toll it. Lots of money for the toll operator. But bad for the commuter because there's no other highway close if you live near SH 288.

It's been a few decades since you actually had to film on location.

I believe that closure was for the instalation of the barrier... ??

Thank you.

That seems extremely overwrought. And they're adding SIDEWALKS?

That's not exactly walkable.

Are they still planning on keeping US 74 a divided highway through Charlotte even with the so called "express lanes"? If anything they should make that entire corridor a controlled access freeway with frontage roads along the side similar to the freeways in Texas so business owners can still have easy access.

US 62/180 El Paso, TX

Renders of the Montana Avenue upgrade in El Paso. Montana Avenue is part of US 62 & US 180. It wouldn't be Texas without some big direct connectors.

Record of Decision signed for long-proposed new freeway

The Valley’s Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway, proposed by regional planners since the 1980s, has received final approval from the Federal Highway Administration, paving the way for the Arizona Department of Transportation to move the project forward.

The Record of Decision, signed March 5 by the Federal Highway Administration, grants the final approval necessary for ADOT to begin the process of acquiring right of way, complete the design and begin construction of the 22-mile-long freeway to serve the metro Phoenix region.

The South Mountain Freeway is the last piece to complete the Loop 202 and Loop 101 freeway system necessary for high-quality regional mobility, according to regional planners.

This is huge for the Phoenix Metro Area, finally the last piece of the 202

so now we have the widening of the 202, 101, 303, and soon we will have the last piece of the 202 as well possibly another I 10 widening in the West Valley

They'd be very useful for bicyclists. I remember a long road in Texas that was busy, but had no sidewalks. No one would actually walk on the sidewalk if it were there, but a bicycle could use it.

Sure it is. With those vertical delineators instead of proper barriers between the express and local lanes, pedestrians can jaywalk across the whole thing with only one jersey barrier to hop over.

Seriously, what were they thinking? Maybe I'll look it up at some point.

When I was in junior high, a kid in my school got killed trying to cross a four-lane highway with a jersey barrier....
