Beltline/Verona Rd (US 12/14/18/151 - Madison, WI) update

WisDOT just posted an updated study/plan report for the Verona Rd/Beltline area in Madison, WI. Verona Rd (US 18/151) is a major cross-state/multi-state highway with fully interstate-compatible freeway sections in the Madison area (around suburban Verona and Mount Horeb, WI, for example) that drops down to a major semi-suburban arterial street as it approaches the Beltline (US 12/14/18/151), a six-lane urban freeway, connecting to it with a very tight and congested diamond interchange. This is #1 on my list of 'weaknesses' in the entire Wisconsin highway network and is a major traffic bottleneck.

See:
http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/project...rona/index.htm

Also, see:
http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=4...87891&t=h&z=14
for its location.

The current plan is for incremental improvements with the ultimate buildout being a 'Texas-style' freeway/frontage road arrangement with a free-flow freeway connection for the major US 18/151 turn movements.

Another factoid about that (Horrid Piece of Horse Crap) from the most recent PIM presentation:
Quote:
The number of vehicles that want to use the Verona Road interchange is higher than any other interchange in the Madison Area – Even the interstate interchanges!
Here are the links to the most recent Public Info Meeting Power Point, held last year:
Enjoy!

Here is the completed Hillsborough St. streetscape improvement project in Raleigh, NC. This is the main retail district for NC State University.

The project included roundabouts which replace traffic signals, reducing 4 lanes of traffic to 2, adding a brick median, burying powerlines, LED street lights, and mast-arm poles for the remaining signals. Warning: It's boring....

It's really sad now that surfaces such as this are becoming commonplace in many parts of the US.

Googlesurfing surprise: a new relocated section of US 35 in West Virginia. At first view it looks like there's a folded diamond interchange included, but I think they're just relocating the crossroad to a more favorable location for an at-grade intersection.

Not far from there, in Ohio, a rather odd interchange layout.

EDIT: Whoa, that last one's nothing compared to this one. What on Earth were they thinking here?

US 41 (WI) contruction-geek zone 'after' videos posted

WisDOT just posted several drive-through 'after' video clips, both on the freeways and on the adjacent surface streets, of the US 41 construction-geek zones in the Oshkosh and Green Bay, WI areas, especially around the WI 29 interchange. Note the MUTCD-compliant overhead BGSs.

http://us41wisconsin.gov/overview/project-videos

Enjoy!

That just looks to me like they wanted to get the message across with minimal paint usage or something... is road paint really that expensive?

I drove that new US35 section in WV a few months ago and it's a nice change to the two lane road one had to take before and that interchange near Gallipolis is just utter non-sense when driving through it.

Agreed, awesome pics Nexis, but still almost an entire page worth in one shot is too much.

When I went to New Jersey (Newark, Jersey City, Harrison) in March, there were many potholes even on main roads (not on freeways). Is that always the case in New Jersey or they actually fix them in spring/summer?

Urban Jersey's Highways are horrible and some roads , but most of there streets and roads are very good....always upgraded and made PED friendly. Some of the Industrial ones will never get fixed.
